WASHINGTON — Democrats took a big step Friday toward making South Carolina the first state to hold its presidential primary in the 2028 cycle, potentially handing former Vice President Kamala Harris a big early advantage should she launch a third White House bid.
The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws panel gave the Palmetto State the nod to go first with 26 votes, followed by Nevada (19 votes) and longtime first-in-the-nation primary state New Hampshire (4 votes).
Friday’s committee vote is expected to be approved next month by the full DNC, formalizing the calendar.
Democratic activists had pushed hard in recent years for more diverse states to go first with their nominating contests rather than predominantly white Iowa and New Hampshire.
Then-President Joe Biden successfully lobbied for South Carolina to lead the calendar in 2024 after his victory there four years earlier propelled him to the Democratic nomination. The predominantly black Democratic primary electorate in that state is expected to favor Harris, the first woman of color to be vice president, should she run again.
“Black voters didn’t just show up for this party in 2020. They saved us,” Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb said in remarks advocating for South Carolina. “They saved our entire country from Donald Trump.”
Other advocates cited a recent Supreme Court decision weakening the 1965 Voting Rights Act as reason to elevate the Southern state’s African-American electorate.

South Carolina has a significant and violent historical association with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), particularly during Reconstruction and into the 20th century, marked by widespread terrorism, lynchings, and political intimidation aimed primarily at African Americans and Republicans.

Doesn’t New Hampshire have a law where they will schedule their primary before any other state’s primary?
Or is that law no longer in effect?
Or are they saying that if New Hampshire had a primary early, it would not count towards convention delegates?
Let’s hope they pick Harris 2028.

Georgia has a much higher black population compared to Iowa and New Hampshire which favors Kamala. The Dems are afraid of AOC winning the primary (she polled much higher than Kamala) so decided to switch things up. The Dem establishment is afraid of running AOC just like they were afraid of running Bernie.
It seems to me there was some rule or proposed rule last time to precisely that effect.
That said, New Hampshire isn’t going to like this one little bit. To my mind they have no basis for demanding allegiance to this anachronistic scheduling.
THAT said, even when rats do something unobjectionable, they manage to do it for a corrupt purpose. Despite the media hype, they know Cortez is an unelectable idiot. They need someone much smarter and smoother like Mamdani, though of course he is not eligible to run. So they’ve rigged it in the hopes that South Carolina, like they did in 2020, can propel the bosses’ chosen candidate. Whether that’s Harris, I dont know, but if they’ve come to the conclusion she’s the best in the stable, it says a lot about the other horses
