Coast Guard Monitors Chinese Vessels in Arctic for First Time in 2026

The Department of Defense said the operation was designed to protect American sovereign rights.

The U.S. Coast Guard has undertaken an operation to monitor two Chinese ships in the Arctic.

Officials have monitored two ships, Xue Long and Lue Long 2, as they moved north through the U.S. exclusive economic zone and the U.S. extended continental shelf in the Bering Sea last week, according to a Department of Defense (DOD) press release.

The DOD and the Coast Guard did not confirm the specific dates on which Operation Frontier Sentinel took place, though the Coast Guard said it happened last week.

"Alongside the Department of War, the Department of State, and our international partners, we are actively responding to competitor activities across an increasingly contested Arctic," said Rear Adm. Bob Little, U.S. Coast Guard Arctic District commander.

The Arctic has emerged as a critical arena for competition between global powers, driven by melting ice, vast natural resources, and shorter global shipping routes.

Both the Baltic and the Arctic seabeds are full of underwater infrastructure, including energy pipelines and internet cables that are critical for communications and financial transactions. In 2024, the DOD warned that Russia and China were collaborating in the region, prompting a step-up of its defenses.

DOD said the operation was carried out to protect U.S. sovereign rights, oversee international law, and enable the Coast Guard to detect and respond to any potential threats.

It marked the first time in 2026 that Chinese vessels were tracked in this area. In 2025, the Coast Guard...

First of all, it's the Department of War. And the U S Coast Guard reports to DHS, not the DOW. Other than that...

Looks like the press release was from the Department of War and specifies the Coast Guard as doing the monitoring.

I didn’t even notice it. It’s almost as if it was called DOD all my life and it might take a while to adapt.

Cataloging the abundant sea life for their fishing fleet to harvest. They may have already poached as there was a report of an unidentified vessel fishing in the Bering last year, but it vanished in a southerly direction before the CG got there.
