I recently camped in Colorado. There was always bear spray and a .357 Magnum in easy reach.

And we practiced proper food storage techniques.

People who go into the wilderness alone are taking serious risks. Never mind the two-, four-legged, or legless critters or even chronic medical issues - what if you fall, have no cell reception or run out of battery?

New Clue Found in Decades-Old Colorado 14er Missing Hiker Case ..

Michelle Vanek, a 35-year-old wife and mother of four, disappeared on September 24, 2005, during an attempt to summit her first 14er, Mount of the Holy Cross, with a family friend. The massive eight-day search that followed—the largest in state history—involving over 800 volunteers, yielded no trace of her whereabouts. That was until late August 2022, when a father and son stumbled upon a weather-beaten hiking boot in a remote area north of the summit. Forensic tests later confirmed the boot belonged to Vanek.

For 18 long years, the question of what happened to Michelle Vanek hung in the air like the haze of a Colorado wildfire. A recent discovery, however, may finally offer some closure to a case that has long puzzled investigators, searchers, and

A lot like sharks and other predators, bears are just going on instinct.

You would have thought the story of Timothy Treadwell would have gotten people’s attention.

That and Leonardo De Caprio getting mauled in the movie The Revenant.

Never seen anyone mauled in real life but that certainly looked realistic to me.

Did they find a can of bear spray nearby?

“People who go into the wilderness alone are taking serious risks.”

I have gone out alone several times. Never considered it a serious risk.

Bears do what.

What bears do because they are bears.

Popel should do what people do.

Like killing of dangerous animals.

So, we should let people do what people do because we are people.

This camper should have been carrying a gun. Unfortunately, he was only carrying the bear essentials.

Theres a significant bear problem here in Connecticut. I had one climb onto my back deck to let me know I was a week late taking down my bird feeder. Apparently black bears are not afraid of an old man waving a plastic snow shovel. He’s been back a few times since.

3-4 times now the legislature has rejected an introduced plan for a bear hunting season. Technically, under state law you can’t legally kill one even if threatened.

A dog got pretty messed up by a bear the other day. Thankfully the dog survived, but had to have surgery.

Amen to that.

What about being eaten alive by a shark...in shallow waters...as being seen in the east coast? Not pleasant either.
