Maine man uses truck to rescue moose calf from charging bear: 'I knew what I had to do'

A Maine couple used their pickup truck to save a moose calf from a charging bear during a routine fishing trip Thursday, helping reunite the young animal with its mother.

Todd Malcolm told The Associated Press he believed the bear would catch the calf unless he intervened.

"I knew what I had to do, and I just did it," Malcolm said.

The encounter began when Todd and Elvia Malcolm spotted a female moose near the edge of the woods in Telos Township, Maine, and pulled over hoping to snap a photo.

"I said to Elvia, I said, ‘Grab your phone because you’re going to get a chance to get a picture of a moose,’" Todd Malcolm said.

After parking their truck, the couple noticed the moose appeared unusually agitated — and, as it turned out, for good reason.

I would never think of getting involved in something like that.

So the bear (or maybe her cubs) go hungry? I dunno. I tend to root for the predators (Coyote, Tom the Cat). Both are pretty close to the top of the food chain. I’d leave it to them to work out.

I’m too lazy to read the article. But I have to ask: Was it the moose shown below?

Because my whole family is still looking for a bit of payback.

The video is of a woman walking her dog and having to fend off the bear who’s after her dog. Underneath that is a pic of the moose calf running from a bear.

I looked it up. Moose calves are very vulnerable during their first few weeks of life, and black bears are their number one threat in Maine.

Grizzly bears actively hunt newborn deer, elk and other ungulates in the spring as well.

Really stupid. Bears gotta eat, the circle of life. If not at the top of the food chain, guess what, you’re for dinner.

Now there is possibly a subpar moose in the gene pool because this couple doesn’t trust survival of the fittest.

The calfeteria was closed. Dinner was cancelled. That's life!

Why do meat missiles have to eat?

One killed my brothers little dog in NJ. His neighbors hunted it down on a nuisance license. That meat missile needed to die.

Sometimes the moose gets away and you just have to grin and bear it. 😉

I ate some ones cow this evening, or part of it anyway, I guess I need to die also? Me thinks you may be watching too many Disney films. This was a wild animal eating another wild animal, that’s what they do.

(a charging bear)

See, now that’s what I have been trying to warn about.

You give a bear a Credit Card 💳 and this ALWAYS happens.

Just give them a Debit Card 💳 or Cash.

A Debit Card 💳 like MoosesterCharge.

Must I think of EVERYTHING? Sigh 🙄🙄🙄

Just how many bears do we need in the ‘hood?

Do they pay taxes to make the gov’t work?
