A 21-year-old socialist and unpaid former NYC Council intern who claimed she was axed after demanding she and her peers get paid $32 an hour with full health benefits — and plans to sue the Council — was born into wealth.
Mina Farahmand — who willingly interned for free last year to help get fellow silver-spoon socialist Zohran Mamdani elected mayor – is the daughter of a prominent surgeon and grew up in a palatial six-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home on 30 acres in Colville, Wash.
Her father, Mehrdad Farahmand, is a general-surgery specialist at Providence, the largest health care provider in Washington State. Although his salary is not public, a current job posting for a general surgeon at Providence offers $457,269 to $555,423 in pay per year.
The elder Farahmand also owns a vacant five-and-a-half-acre lot about 10 miles away in nearby Kettle Falls, Wash., bringing his total property portfolio to nearly $1 million.
Mina Farahmand made national headlines last month after being fired from an unpaid post as a legislative intern for Councilman Harvey Epstein (D-Manhattan).
The recent New York University graduate and card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America claimed she was terminated as retaliation for spearheading a petition campaign demanding Council Speaker Julie Menin set up a fund to pay all Council interns “a living wage” of $32 hourly — nearly double NYC’s existing minimum wage of $17 an hour – plus health benefits.
Critics blasted the money move by the Gen Zer dripping with generational wealth.
“This is just another nepo-baby agitator who signed up for an unpaid internship, then demanded to be paid after the fact,” said former Councilman Robert Holden, a moderate Democrat, upon learning of Farahmand’s affluent upbringing.

“six-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home on 30 acres”
That property is less than a million?
Communism works until you run out of daddy’s money.............
Interns who expect to get paid is an alien idea to me. I thought internships were merely an opportunity to experience a real workplace while not being an employee.
Recently I started hearing about paid internships for some pretty specific roles (engineering, internet companies, etc.)
Internships for governments were usually for the nerds that were graduating with a poly sci or public administration degree. Back in the day, they were the place where you starting building your network that they could graft from when they started their careers.
I guess I am just an old fart.
I would deport the entire family. Just on principle.
For all we know, her parents may be horrified at her behavior; but she’s an adult.
The wealthy have always been the primary proponents of Communism as a means of exterminating the middle class.
That’s why the greatest chasm between the haves and have-nots exists in “Communist” countries.
Democrats hoisted on their own petard
Mina Farahmand made national headlines.....fired from
an unpaid post for Councilman Harvey Epstein (D-Manhattan).
The card-carrying member of the DSA “said” she was vengefully terminated for demanding Council interns be paid “a living wage” of $32 hourly — nearly double NYC’s existing minimum wage of $17 an hour – plus health benefits.
“She’s just another nepo-agitator whose surgeon father pulls in a six-figure salary ....she knowingly signed up for an unpaid internship, then demanded to be paid,” said former Councilman Robert Holden, a Democrat.
Idiot, she should be demanding at least $150/hour
Fifty years ago, I attended an elite university. I come from a blue-collar family and so, even though Dad provided us a comfortable living, I knew I was one of the lower-income students there. I was a member of a conservative student political organization and we had office space in the student union building. Next door to us was the office of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigage. I liked studying in the office because it was quiet and I could smoke there, and one evening, through the paper-thin walls, I heard one of the Maoist revolutionaries on the phone anxiously talking about how she didn’t know how to break it to her parents that she was a communist. I really had to control myself to keep from laughing. It would be interesting to find out how she turned out in life.
And they learn quickly without their rich parents pockets communism doesn’t work.
Re “ exterminating the middle class”
That Can only happen when the middle class isn’t actively hunting you down and doing a little of their own exterminating.
And that will happen if they F with us. And there’s a lot of of us… Armed to the effing teeth.
Back in the 60s Jerry Rubin used to preach to drop out, quit school, quit jobs, protest all the time and so on. Loudly proclaimed living without working while the saps with jobs paid for welfare for the hippies and later yippies.
It was later revealed Rubin all along had a large income from a trust fund. No worries for him.
Colville … Right next to the thriving metropolis of Republic!
Possibly if she had kept her mouth shut, supported the cause and been more patient she’d have gotten a paycheck courtesy of the taxpayer.
No sympathy for her, but even with my frugal lifestyle, doubt I could survive in NYFC on $32 an hour !
OK, greater Idaho then....
Most internships have always been unpaid; they’re considered part of one’s education. People know that going in.
My son was a paid intern at NASA for 2 summers during college. (yes, he’s an engineer)
