The US and Iran on Sunday agreed to a weeklong de-escalation in the Strait of Hormuz, cooling tensions just in time for Fourth of July celebrations.
The agreement aimed to keep things quiet for US and Iran technical teams negotiating indirectly with one another in Qatar, a US official confirmed to The Post.
The deal has the added benefit of taking down the temperature as the US prepares for America’s 250th birthday and Iran holds funeral ceremonies for slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Friday, Saturday and Monday.
The temporary calm comes even as Washington and Tehran remain locked in a fresh dispute over who ultimately controls shipping through the strategic waterway.
Conflict in the Strait ratcheted up after Iran struck a ship sailing near Oman last week and the US retaliated with fresh attacks on Iranian missile and drone storage locations along the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has continued to insist it has the authority to regulate traffic through the Strait and has demanded the right to impose transit fees after the current interim arrangements expire, while the Trump administration has rejected any Iranian claim over what it says is an international waterway.

Wouldn’t mind treating Big Mo to some rockets’ red glare. Maybe a few bombs bursting in air.
“Lots of bombs in the air!”
Trust the muzzies at your own peril Mr. President as the only thing they love and worship is death.
He doesn’t trust them. Neither do I. We will be prepared.
How many times do we have to politely suggest that he bomb the Iranian bad guys now and end this war so fickle Americans won’t turn the country over to socialists in the midterms and beyond?
No war is worth losing America.
Lucky for us WWII wasn’t ended with months of peace negotiations and a Korea style ongoing cessation of official conflict activity.
Bomb them and get out fast.
10:1 they launch a drone at a ship before the week’s up.
On the one hand, they don’t want any attacks on the multi-city funeral for the remaining chunks of the atolls. On the other hand, if last night’s sporadic but apparently at least partially true stories of assassinations and fighting in Iran are true, this could be a sign of some destabilization of the regime
US, Iran or Iran, US. Semantics.
Yeah, and I have a car for sale, driven by a little old lady only on Sundays.....
He usually would be applauded for resolutely staying with one plan until the deal goes his way.
There is no Good Little Boy Award for being a peacemaker. No one around the country cares about foreign affairs.
He was proud to bring 8 conflicts like Pakistan/India, Congo/Rwanda and Kosovo/Serbia to a cessation in 2025, but notice how some already slipped into battle again and NO ONE credits him with being a peacemaker, including Pope Leo XIV.
People cannot locate countries like Iran on a map. They see the dollars adding up and up on the gas pump and wonder if their little girl will have to quit ballet and music lessons and their son can’t have the bike he wants.
The extra money was wasted on gas and food prices due to a useless war going on and on.
And we could lose our country to Commies due to the resentment and anger over prices.
Not worth it.
delay delay delay...
when will Trump learn
Right on!
Trump and allies should set up a program where the Strait must remain open and the cost of ANY AND ALL damages inflicted upon shipping by Iran will be 100% covered by IRANIAN IMPOUNDED FUNDS. This would stiffen the spines of the shipping insurers and reinsurers. And IRANIANS UNDERSTAND MONEY, do not want to lose it and will punish (i.e., kill) those who cause the loss. And the ones causing the loss are the IRGC.
I’m posting this in every thread where the absence of such MONETARY DAMAGES ASSESSMENT is partially responsible for the situation. Current methods are NOT WORKING! These on-again, off-again ceasefires are getting old. THE OIL MUST FLOW!
