When American and Israeli warplanes struck Iran on Feb. 28, Israeli officials let themselves believe the alliance was entering a golden age. Four months later, they are bracing for a future where Israel stands more alone than ever.
The vice president of the United States set the stage last week, telling Israel it has almost no friends left in the world, and that it should think hard before turning on the one it has.
But the problem for Israel is much bigger than JD Vance, according to seven people, including U.S. and Israeli officials and others familiar with the relationship. Instead, they say, Vance is only the face of the new normal, in which Israel’s status as an American ally doesn’t stand above all others.
Israel had expected when President Donald Trump came into office that his America First foreign policy would include “an exception” for Israel, said an Israeli political adviser.
“That was never going to hold. We were never going to be able to stay for four years as an exception to everything else America does in its foreign policy,” the adviser said. “When the clash came, Israel was naive to think that we would be able to be exempt from those expectations.”
The chill between the sides is evident. In 2025, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Washington five times. He visited once this year in February but there are no dates on the calendar for another White House visit, and phone calls have tapered off considerably, according to a person familiar with interactions between the two governments.
“I don’t think we’ve reached the worst place possible,” the person said. “There’s more to come.”

The whole damned world is being overrun by 2 billion islamists murdering millions, and most people can’t get over 8 million Jews defending themselves.

That's not the issue. The issue is timing and scale of retribution. The timing issue is related to keeping the bogus "cease fire" going long enough to get enough oil out of the Gulf that the world economy doesn't crash after reaching "tank bottoms." If that happened, we'd lose the mid-terms, big time and Israel would lose with us. Things are dicey, and Netanyahu should be thinking more strategically, constraining the IDF a bit for now with a less obviously disproportionate response set. Trump is telling Bibi to suck it up and sit tight for now. Once more pipeline capacity to the Mediterranean is in place, things will be different.
JD is certainly not winning my heart & mind. Rubio, who I disliked when he ran for POTUS, has surprised on the upside. JD is not inspiring my confidence or loyalty.
Vance has argued for years, even before he was vice president, that Israel’s interests and America’s do not always align, and that the U.S. should not be dragged into a war with Iran on its behalf. “Israel has the right to defend itself, but America’s interest is sometimes going to be distinct,” he said on a podcast in 2024 while he was Trump’s running mate. “And our interest very much is in not going to war with Iran.”
Issuing a strongly worded letter to Israel or any other nation is healthy. American interests are above all others’. Unless you’re not an American.
So, does his mean all the AIPAC and dual-citizenship Jewish folks will support the democrats? Oh .... they already support the democrats and hate MAGA. There are MAGA Jews and MAGA Israel supporters - but they do not put Israel's interests above America and Americans. There are non-MAGA Jews who have the choice of supporting an anti-sematic Democrat party or converting to MAGA. Sadly, we see a majority of Jews who continue support the democrat party.
Bottom line: Vance understands that MAGA and not Israel-first donors are the foundation to his support. He is not and never was accountable to AIPAC and anti-MAGA donors.
I don’t know if you’ve been following the Ukraine-Russia war, but pipelines are not invulnerable infrastructure assets. Quite the contrary. You can’t hide or move them.
You misunderstand.
Americans don’t want to keep putting the interest of 8 million foreigners (nor 2 billion) above the interests of 300 million Americans.
We don’t love your favorite foreign country the way you do. You should just go there and stay.
Politico is Leftist crap.
Don’t pay too much to anything they publish.
So long as God is on their side, so am I. With God as their protector, others need not apply,
JD Vance needs to understand that getting rid of the Islamist regime in Iran benefits the whole world not just the US and Israel. Trump understands.
Obviously. The difference between using the Strait and pipelines is distance, which gives more time to interdict a drone attack.
By being successful the jews are losing their first place in victimhood status, something they’ve hung onto since the holocaust.
And there’s nothing more rewarding nowdays, in this age of pathological compassion, than being seen as a victim.
Ironically, through their successes against their Muslim neighbors they (aided by western propagandists) have managed to paint the jews attackers and haters as victims!
Quite the sleight of hand!
Umm, you can’t relocate the Gulf States to the Mediterranean shores. The pipeline has an end that is within spitting distance of the enemy.
Recall April:
Saudi Arabia’s critical pipeline to the Red Sea suffered a recent attack from Iran, cutting throughput by 700,000 barrels per day.
The attack hit a pumping station on the East-West pipeline, according to a state news agency report. This pipeline brings crude oil from processing facilities near the Persian Gulf to an export terminal on the Red Sea called Yanbu.
Attacks on Saudi’s Manifa and Khurais production facilities have slashed the kingdom’s output by 600,000 bpd, according to the Saudi Press Agency report. Several refineries have also been attacked.
The damage to Saudi energy infrastructure will only compound the massive disruption to global oil supplies triggered by Iran’s attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Issuing a strongly worded letter to Israel or any other nation is healthy. American interests are above all others’. Unless you’re not an American.”
Quite a few jews (Mark Levin chief among them) constantly equate America’s interest to Israel’s, in fact they even make America’s interests subservient to Israel’s.
“The vice president of the United States set the stage last week, telling Israel it has almost no friends left in the world”
Like it or not, that’s the blunt truth. Are there any other countries that could be described as friends of Israel?
Is what we are being presented reality or political illusion?
Events in the weeks ahead months ahead will prove that.
I am not being sucked into online generated flash mobs of opinion demonizing anyone or anything from Iran-Muslims to Trump-Vance to anyone.
Watched James Carville, Al Hunt other day with guest discussing Israeli politics.
New flavor to replace Netanyahu is ex-general Gadi Eisenkot to be PM in October election.
That guy worked for former PM-Jeffrey Epstein associate Ehud Barak.
What filth so watch out don’t go too far into rage, resentment don’t go the “crucify him” route.
Vanve is being a loyal VP, defending Trump’s policies and countering the prevalent notion that Trump is Bebe’s big stick in the region.
Iran has to keep its proxies in Lebanon under control.
If there are no proxy attacks the Israelis will have no need to retaliate.
The Israelis have withdrawn from Lebanon before when the need to be there has diminished enough.
Bibi answers to the Knesset, not to Team Trump.
The IDF knows where the Iranian refineries are and it already has all it needs to cut off the supplies to the petrol pumps in Iran for a very long time.
You’ll be bitching about Jews the day the scimitar cuts your head clean off.
