$0.25 “cheaper” per gallon because the ethanol that goes into that gallon is massively subsidized at every level from seed to tank and probably cost us over $1.00 per gallon, but taken from us at places other than the pump.

Before ethanol a car could sit for years and still run on the old gas, albeit badly. But one filled with an ethanol blend will need a new tank, sender and pump because it will be full of water.
With an ethanol blend, plastic tanks are needed.
And reduces mpg. The savings is more apparent than real.
