Well, it's something, I guess.
The sheriff in Las Vegas has a plan to end the drag-racing portion of "teen takeovers" in his city, and it just might work.
That's quite the deterrent.
I mean, yeah, arrests would be nice. Convictions, nicer. Parents being held accountable ... even better.
But this is a start.
Here's Fox5 in Vegas:
The vehicle destructions mark the first use of a new law passed during the last legislative session. Assemblywoman Linda Hunt sponsored the legislation, which allows law enforcement to confiscate vehicles used in street racing and destroy them if they cannot pass a safety inspection.
'If you participate in these criminal activities, we're going to arrest you, we're going to prosecute you, and we're going to destroy those vehicles that you use to create havoc in our community,' McMahill said.
Commissioner Kirkpatrick said the law provides a new tool for law enforcement. Under the statute, impounded vehicles must pass a safety check before being released. Because most street racing vehicles have been modified, they cannot pass inspection. If the vehicles are also connected to other felonies, they can be destroyed.
Hopefully, this deterrent will be effective.
Some are skeptical.

I've been saying this for TWO YEARS
-
What if the cars are stolen? Will they be destroyed instead of returned to the rightful owners who did nothing wrong?
I am in favor of this.
But we need more prisons.
We need a lot of mental institutions.
We need to remove a lot of people from society.
We need to shake up some lives and convince millions of people that their behavior needs to change. They need to act like polite, civilized people. This is about petty criminals, it’s about the “Karens” in society, and it is about the people who fatigue us. About 5 years in lockup ought to cause an attitude adjustment.
Assuming these weren’t carjacked or stolen cars.
The 1960s Marvel Comics artist Jim Steranko said in an interview that in his troubled, juvenile delinquent youth he used to pride himself on how fast he could steal a car.
He said if the car he stole ended up having a cheap or poor quality sound system he would drive it to the end of the block and abandon it there, looking for a better one.
Part of the socialist/communist trend of “you will own nothing and like it.”
Cars should be sold or seized as police vehicles. Guilty party has to pay for all expenses to reconfigure the car to street legal.
Damn, that headlight alignment again!
Seems like a rather large loophole.
Indeed. Seems counterproductive.
Make a public spectacle of it. Put several seized cars in a dirt arena stock car bumper race. Sell tickets on a Friday night. Last car to survive gets returned to owner,..as is.
this should be the law in all states and all jurisdictions ... period ...
As far as I am concerned, they can lock the street-takeover driver inside the car, then destroy it.
They are already removed from society. It's others who are intruding into their subculture spaces.
Agreed
Should be federal law
That means they will all be stolen cars used in the takeovers.

Make all cars driverless. Problem solved.
Outstanding!
You were correct when you first said it and are correct now. It also points to how anti-ICE and ANTIFA rioters and harassers using cars should be dealt with: a shotgun slug to the engine block, with the car towed away to a lot and fees with fees and fines assessed to get it back. If the car is now claimed, it can be destroyed or auctioned off.
