An animal rights activist has been arrested after clashing with parents at a reptile stall where children were taking pictures with baby crocodiles.
The drama erupted at the Surfers Paradise markets in Queensland on Friday evening when one angry mum confronted outspoken vegan Tash Peterson for filming her kids at the stall.
"Held by the neck for children to touch, treated like objects, and then posed with as if they’re just for a photo opportunity - how disgusting is this?" Ms Peterson said in a clip posted to her Instagram account.
She is then approached by a frustrated parent, who said, "I don’t really care, that’s (sic) my children. Don’t take photos of my kids".
Ms Peterson hit back, saying "maybe don't put them here with animal slaves, what do you expect?"
"You're teaching them to abuse animals," she said.
A visibly upset mother then threatened to "knock her block off" on the spot if the activist did not stop filming.
"This is a public space. I can do what I want," Ms Peterson replied.
"Many horrible things are part of the circle of life, but that doesn’t justify doing them as a human being."
The mother responded, saying Ms Peterson was entitled to her own beliefs.
"That’s your beliefs, and that’s fine," the mother said.
"But that’s not my beliefs. It’s my children, and they want to do it."
The argument escalated further when the parent, after being told to "get her morals straight", labelled Ms Peterson a "paedophile" for filming children.
In another clip shared by the protester, she was confronted by additional bystanders who expressed anger that she filmed children at the stall without their parents’ consent.
Police were called to the scene, and the animal rights activist was arrested the following day for being a "public nuisance".
"I spoke out against reptiles being used for children's entertainment, and the situation quickly escalated," Ms Peterson captioned the video.
"The next day, I was the one arrested.
"Children's faces have been blurred for privacy."
Ms Peterson was slapped with a $1,000 fine and given a one-month ban from the precinct.
