An active hostage situation was ongoing Tuesday afternoon in Bakersfield after a suspected bank robber claimed he had a bomb strapped to his body.

Officers evacuated surrounding buildings near the Chase bank branch in the city’s downtown area and shut down streets after the attempted heist.

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, one person was released by the suspect, according to Bakersfield Police.

All of the people being detained by the suspect are in good health, according to authorities.

Police described the suspect as a man who was making bomb threats and appeared to have a bomb strapped to his torso.

Some of the those inside the bank were able to escape the unhinged suspect.

The call came in just after 1 p.m. at the Chase Bank off Chester and 17th Street.

It is believed there are multiple people in the building with the suspect, according to FOX 11.

“An unidentified male subject is currently barricaded with an unknown number of members of our community,”Sergeant Eric Celedon of the Bakersfield Police Department told ABC 23. “Every single resource is at this site’s disposal.”

Apparently not a bank robbery. He was looking for some county office in the same building. He supposedly is trying to clear his name, some legal issue, maybe a custody issue. The FBI is involved now.

“Police described the suspect as a man who was making bomb threats and appeared to have a bomb strapped to his torso.”

Gee. Which ‘religious denomination’ does that on a regular basis?

Probably Amish.

Prayers up for the hostages. I don’t see this ending well. Please keep us posted!

I came here looking for something
I couldn’t find anywhere else
I don’t want to be nobody
Just want a chance to be myself

I’ve done a thousand miles of thumbing
Yes, I’ve worn blisters on my heels
Trying to find me something better
On the streets of Bakersfield

[Chorus]
You don’t know me but you don’t like me
You say you care less how I feel
How many of you that sit and judge me
Ever walked the streets of Bakersfield?

“”””He supposedly is trying to clear his name, some legal issue””””

He probably should have come at it with a different approach.

Well, then. That's quite the way to go about making things better.

I don't think a bomb & hostages were his best way to go about that. But, yeah, the FBI can likely make sure everyone knows his name.

Clearing your name in a government building by strapping a bomb to your torso, take hostages and make bomb threats.

I dunno, I see a problem with this plan…
