The U.S. Postal Service reached a multiyear deal with DHL eCommerce for last-mile parcel delivery services in the United States expected to be worth more than $10 billion.
He said DHL either had "to invest a ton of capital to build out an end-to-end network, or they need to partner with someone that has that last mile capability" like USPS.
The deal is critical to the financially strapped USPS. Amazon.com said it had reached a new agreement with the U.S. Postal Service on package deliveries

You principaled libertarians-what gives?
Long distance phone companies compete with each other but still need the local exchanges to deliver their signal the last mile as only one company can maintain the network. Cable tv makes it two. Satellites and cell towers can pull the rug out from under both of them. Shouldn’t companies not be allowed to make deals with their competitors?

but on USPS revenue from postage and services, which totaled roughly $80.5 billion in 2025.
USPS Total Expenses (2025): Around $90 billion, driven by employee costs, elaborate overtime schemes and overstaffing.
The US Postal Service brings in an average of $262.5 million daily.
The Postal Service pays roughly $2.1 billion in salaries and benefits every two weeks.
The USPS is currently experiencing a financial crisis, operating at a net loss despite billions in revenue.
Taxpayers need to know how the USPS reached its legal maximum debt of $15 billion.
This is the reason for the USPS’ financial problems.
US Postal Service (USPS) employees earn an average salary of approximately $64,000–$68,000 per year as of 2026, with typical roles ranging from $44,000 to over $98,000 depending on position and location.
City mail carriers often have median wages around $57,000–$58,000.
Specialized or management roles pay significantly more.
Some of the lower status mail sorters ——no skills necessary
——earn as much as $100,000 plus............. with overtime.
“Overstaffing” is also a problem.

They already do a lousy job of last mile delivery for Amazon. I usually have to go down to the post office to get packages even though I have a huge mailbox.
One thing I’d say is that the PO is stupid when it comes to parcel delivery because they treat it like regular mail and apply those rules. The problems that arise make you not want to use them for parcels.
Specifically, if you move, the PO gives free forwarding service for the first 30 days. After that, you have to pay for it.
But when it comes to things like rental property or temporary living with other family or friends, if you send deliberately send a parcel the old address, you have to use the name of the one living there. If you use yours, the PO will call it undeliverable even if the address is valid. This is fine for regular mail, when you take into account official government correspondence (IRS, DMV, etc.).
But if you know you’re going to get a delivery while out of town and rather it go to a family or friend’s house instead of sitting outside your door for a week, you’ll be out of luck.
Over time, these “undeliverables” have added up making many retailers not want to use the PO for parcels because of the hassle of dealing w/those returns and reorders.
USPS doesn’t deliver to my house so I have to go to the PO to get any packages delivered there, I try to avoid anything that uses the USPS.
So you don’t want companies paying USPS for package deliveries? Are we assuming that no other companies can make deals as well? Won’t overall cost efficiency of USPS be improved by making more deliveries on existing runs?
This is actually bad news for customers.. DHL has a first class tracking system full of detailed information and updated frequently. USPS, on the other hand, has the worst tracking system of any major carrier. If DHL tracking ends with the handoff to usps then that’s bad news

I don't get tons of deliveries, but 2 recently were an Amazon driver delivering an obviously ripped open, empty package...and just this week a Walmart driver taking a picture of an empty field while saying my items were delivered to my home (they weren't).
Sounds like the US Postal Service is in dire need of Elon Musk type of person it’s insane to keep their pace.

btw, UPS has had a last mile partnership with USPS for a long time ...
When I have to use DHL I watch the tracking app and meet the courier because even with GPS they can’t seem to deliver to the right house. One told me he uses his personal Garmin. German engineering…

I worked at the post office for ten years before I retired : if they want to save money they could get rid of 90% of management.
