I am fortunate enough to be part of an organization that has an ongoing group meeting with diagnosed PTSD vets. I participate in this weekly gathering as a vet that has never experienced ground combat, but suffered a very traumatic violent situation that I was not in any way prepared for. And yes, many people with a PTSD diagnosis are misdiagnosed, and it has been abused as a catchall for other issues, and I believe that was encouraged to defraud for disability claims. I also agree that those with true PTSD aren’t typically the time bombs waiting to go off, but we have some members that have fallen into that category, usually be being improperly medicated, another direct failure of our VA system. Some of these guys that are in the group that have become outwardly violent received reduced sentences after being allowed to participate in our program.
The biggest problem with PTSD affected vets is suicide. The founder of the NFP was a tanker in Iraq, and that was the main motivation for starting his organization after having his own “rock bottom” point which I won’t go into detail. Being and avid hunter and fisherman, he created a program where he takes PTSD vets out on his offshore boat and goes deep sea fishing, no cost. What makes this organization next level in my mind is that that’s not just a one and done; it is followed up with things like our weekly “session” (fight club rules, what’s said in there stays in there”) and partnerships with other local vet NFPs for further support and resources. Thanks for That FRiend...
I served on a SAC AIRBASE,March AFB near River Side California. Many Soldiers came Back from Nam there and through out SoCal in the early ‘70s. The Toll put on those Soldiers was Palpable and still is.I meet them all the time. I was at My VA check up Yesterday and I go that extra bit to Help or be Friendly.I Salute You for being in a Group that directly Helps Them.
