The communist seeds of depravity and violence have sprouted
American Thinker ^ | 5 May, 2026 | Susan Quinn

When we speak to people about communism, especially young people, they often insist that although communism has failed everywhere it’s been tried, the U.S. will be successful in adopting it.

They clearly have not learned the lessons of human nature and depravity. And they might be surprised to learn that those attributes exist abundantly in this country.

We only need to study Cambodia, one of the most extreme applications of communism ever imposed, to get a hint of what might show up here. Young people in this country have a hard time relating to the Killing Fields, because the main message generally communicated is that millions of people were killed at the hands of one man: Pol Pot. But what is lost in relating the gruesome story is that Pol Pot was a communist.

During the last days of the Vietnam War in April 1975, Cambodia’s pro-American government was overthrown by the Communist Party of Kampuchea under the leadership of Pol Pot. His ideology deeply rooted in Marxist-Leninist thought, Pol Pot rallied his Khmer Rouge army in support of his vision of a self-sufficient agrarian society, founded on the principles of Mao’s Cultural Revolution in China and free of foreign influence.

In order to meet that goal, urbanites needed to be evacuated from the cities. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, monks, and other professionals were sent to labor in the fields, being forced to work well beyond their strength. If you even looked like an intellectual, which could include wearing glasses, you were an enemy of the state.

The atrocities that were committed during Pol Pot’s reign are difficult to fathom. Torture and executions were common; imprisonment was standard. Eventually, Pol Pot was defeated by the Vietnamese army.

Do they teach history in public schools anymore?

It’s really not an intellectual discussion. We already have communist propaganda in schools everywhere. We have hoards of lunatics in all areas of science, and the cities are electing more and more anti social anti police communists.

If they do, they don't tell the truth. i.e. Slavery.

We already are close to the Cultural Revolution in our universities. Its an easy step to expand this into the broader culture.

Not since 1979 and the creation of the DoE. With its dismantling the light has a chance to break through again, lots of “teaching” to unlearn though.

Too generalized a question.

See Howard Zinn...

“We already have communist propaganda in schools everywhere.”

Public schools are government owned and operated.

They became popular in the 1840s. “The Communist Manifesto” came out in 1848.

Public schools were developed to keep the Catholic Church from educating Catholic immigrants and to acclimatize young people to do steady work with little reward, ideal for supplying factories with reliable, low-cost labor.

The old stock New Englanders would work in a factory for a time, save up some money, and go back to the family farm.

It begins with religious socialism, so even if you teach about depravity and genocide, most Americans exempt themselves.

BLM is only one of hundreds of Communist ‘cuts’ taking place in our Republic today that’s stripping the flesh off the Capitalist bones of America.

We’ve had communism since we’ve had public schools.

It’s really the share of the economy that escapes market force discipline.

Communism was given a strong boost by the introduction of the permanent federal income tax and fiat money.

Do they teach history in public schools anymore?

Depends on what the meaning of history is.

Agreed. And I’m not sure that communism has failed any more than capitalism apparently has.

If they DO teach history in schools, they must skip over the part about the problems with Communism. I don’t recall how much this was taught in my Hi-school days, but I do remember getting a dose of learning about it in my early military days. Of course that was all some time ago, but the threat is ever-present & even young school kids need to be aware of it. Right now, the folks in NYC should be getting a closeup look at it’s failings.

It has not failed anywhere. The inherent economic misery, lack of freedom, and concentration camps are features, not bugs.
