Supposedly he would find a photograph, and trace it, making edits from there. The cover of Rio was traced over a Vogue Paris cover, and the model, Marcie Hunt didn't know it was from her photograph until 42 years later. Long after Nagel died.

His work was all done before computers. Acrylics on artboard. But it could be imitated with computer graphics programs, sure. The flat, muted colors; hard shadows; clean lines used sparingly…
