Tod Cutler investigates a medieval hack for increasing arrow distance during archery. Using a calibrated crossbow to ensure repeatable test conditions, the experiment examines how removing bindings and altering fletchings impacts the flight performance of arrows compared to standard configurations.

Interesting vid! Thanks.

He needs some CFD jock to analyze the arrow variations.

Thanks. I took up archery a year ago when a bow maker friend gave me a traditional long bow made out of yew. I struggled to get arrows anywhere near the target. I ended the season with my last two arrows in the bulls eye as good as the hi tech compound bow guys with sites.

I subscribe to a YouTube Channel run by Brit Kevin Hicks. It's called The History Squad. Kevin is a British military veteran, and a retired policeman, who spent many years mastering the English longbow. He entered many competitions over the years, and worked at Warwick Castle and other historical sites demonstrating the use of the longbow. He also makes videos on other aspects of the medieval world, along with battles that England has fought over the centuries. During one of his videos on WWI, he talked about a corpsman who was on the field in the same area my great-uncle was mortally wounded by German machine gun fire. This corpsman repeatedly took dead and injured off the field during the fighting. I left a comment to Kevin, telling him this, and that I would like to think that it was this specific corpsman who took my injured great-uncle to the field hospital that day. I told him my relative was buried in Terlincthun British Military Cemetery in Wimile, France. He replied that his ancestor was buried there too, although he was one of the unlucky men who had no gravestone.

His most recent video is 10 minutes and 3 seconds.

It looks like an archer would empty his quiver in 1 to 1-1/2 minutes. Then what?

Thanks for that link, I went to add The History Squad’s videos page to my history vids bookmarks, and it was already in there, but I’d not edited the listing to make it easier to find, good to have someihing sort of new in my rotation.

You’re welcome. Kevin’s videos are always very interesting. His wife films him while he does his presentations. He’s gone to several castles over the years and filmed his visits. Because he’s done living history events at many castles over the years, he gets to go into places where normal visitors don’t get to go. He even did a video of Little Big Horn when he visited this country a while back. I found it very interesting, especially since I never got to go there myself, and now I’m too old to go galavanting all over the country. During part of his military career, he was stationed in Belfast, and talks about his time there, and also tells stories about some of the things that happened while he was a policeman.

As a kid, I used to watch Richard Greene in The Adventures of Robin Hood that ran from 1955 to 1959. Bought the DVD’s for all the seasons.
