I Think I Know Why Everything Sucks

I think I know why everything sucks…

…and it’s because everything is fake

We are getting fake college degrees that cost 4 years and six figures that teach you fake education and get you fake jobs.

We are eating fake food, with fake ingredients, funded by fake research.

We are scrolling through fake lives, with fake relationships, who take fake, curated vacations to promote brands that make fake products.

We are voting for fake candidates, who run on fake promises, inside a fake system that was never designed to fix anything.

We are raising kids in fake schools that teach fake history, fake science, which quietly produce fake adults who can’t think for themselves.

We are watching fake news, about fake crises, produced by fake journalists, for fake outrage.

We are borrowing fake money that was printed from nothing, to fund a fake economy that would collapse in an afternoon if people stopped pretending it was real.

We are buying fake organic food that’s just a paid label, and drinking fake juice with two percent juice in it, and putting fake cheese on cheeseburgers that’s just “cheese product” on fake burger meat.

We are donating to fake nonprofits where the moeny never makes it to the people and then funding fake foreign aid that buys real weapons to prop up fake governments.

We are going to fake therapy that teaches fake coping skills instead of telling you hard truths.

We are buying fake furniture made of fake wood that’s actually compressed sawdust and glue that looks like wood, ships in fourteen boxes with instructions written in a fake language that isn’t quite any language, requires tools it doesn’t include, takes 4 hours to build, wobbles on day 1, and is totally destroyed in 6 months.

We are downloading fake “free” apps that charge a subscription after three days for AI features that don’t work, hidden behind a paywall we didn’t see, protected by a privacy policy we didn’t read, buried inside Terms of Service written by lawyers specifically so we wouldn’t read them, that we agreed to by tapping a button the size of a thumbnail, that gave a company we’ve never heard of the right to sell our data to companies we’ll never hear of, to build a profile on us we’ll never see, to influence decisions we’ll never know were made.

IT. IS. ALL. FAKE.

And we all yearn for what was once real.

Don’t you remember? Did you forget?

There was a time with a simple handshake between men was a contract.

When bread went stale because… well, that’s what real bread does!

When kids played outside all day until it was dark, and nobody tracked them.

When a family could live off a single income.

When music was made by people who LIVED something real and you could feel it.

When schools was HARD… and that was the point!

When doctors knew your name and your family, they even came to your house,

When you bought something once… and it was yours forever.

When the chair your grandmother bought once lasted 70 years and she passed it onto your dad.

And now nothing is real, and that’s why everything sucks.

Poetically correct, factually suspect.

Todays cars last longer than cars made in the 1950s. Better metalurgy, engines and lubrication.

However the exceptions, the poetic imagery touched my soul.

I lived through those former times.

I know! The problems my father had, trying to keep his old cars on the road.

I used to have to get out of my first car on the side of the road and fiddle with the carburetor when it would just decide to conk out at highway speed. Back in the late '70s.

And I used to have to get a new muffler ever two or three years, due to winter salt damage in the northeast.

I still live in the same place, and I haven't had to get a new carburetor in like 20 years. A small thing, but I appreciate it.

And the richest man in the world couldn't have an iPhone, or get a CAT scan or MRI, or use the internet, back in the 1950s. Couldn't get genetically-tailored cancer therapy. Couldn't get cataract surgery. That's just scratching the surface, of course.

When a family could live off a single income.

Still possible - manage your expectations, be willing to move where the jobs are. Avoid debt

Where O’ where did that expression come from, that
“Everything Sucks”? I consider it mildly disgusting.
Was it from a movie or maybe from a song?
All of a sudden in late ‘90’s, people were saying it!
I am now accustomed to hearing it, but I’ve never been able to use it myself.

Well, I've had three cars in the last 20 years.
One was a Toyota 4-Runner. Lasted 180k miles.
Next one was a Honda Pilot. Lasted 225k miles.
When Biden won my wife asked me "what's going to happen?" I said "inflation will ramp up." She said "get a new car." The Pilot was already almost 11 years old. I got another one.

“Everything Sucks”? I consider it mildly disgusting.

First time I ever heard the term "it sucks" was freshman year of college. 1973.

There were a few extra words added after "sucks," that I won't repeat here. Eventually it got whittled down to just the one word.

Every time I hear it, I'm reminded of the original expression. I too find it mildly disgusting (good way to put it) because I remember its origin.

Impressive. Sounds as if you have a wonderful marriage.

20 years and over 400K miles? Sounds about right.

Without getting to religious, learning to ‘walk in the Spirit’ is the start of everything. You learn patience and self control. And you learn to avoid materialism.

I used to drive a lot, to and from work. 44 miles each way.

Now I work from home, like a lot of other people. In the five years I’ve had the second pilot, I’ve only put about 45k miles on it. Less than half the driving. Fine by me!

We are buying fake organic food that’s just a paid label

This may be the greatest feat in mass marketing.

Fashion foods.

I never buy organic.

I never buy bottled water either.

I always felt like I'd just be drinking somebody's else tap water.

I think bacon is the perfect food.

And so far I'm yet to see bacon with an organic label.

Maybe that makes me a closet anti-Semite or Islamaphobe.

Anyways my parents and grandparents ate bacon and most lived a decade longer than my current age.
