Trump leaned toward endorsing Cornyn. Then the leaks started — and Paxton made a ‘genius move’

President Donald Trump was gravitating toward endorsing Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn last week. But he and some top advisers grew frustrated after his intentions leaked to the press, sources familiar with the matter told CNN, and the plan stalled.

Then Cornyn’s opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, announced on Friday that if the Senate passed the president’s voting restrictions bill — something Trump has grown particularly fixated on in recent weeks — he would consider dropping out of the runoff race. Paxton specified the GOP should lift the filibuster to do so, an idea many Republican senators oppose.

White House officials viewed the ploy as a “genius move,” as one Trump official described it, and it kept Paxton in the mix, at least temporarily. Now, Trump has latched onto the idea of tying his endorsement to the passage of his high-priority “SAVE America Act” — which, among other things, would impose new voter ID requirements.

That’s a significant headache for Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who sees a Cornyn primary win as an important pillar of keeping the GOP’s Senate majority, and for the larger party, which has already seen around $100 million sunk into a bruising primary campaign before the contentious, 12-week runoff has even started.

Best to have Paxton make Senate to counteract Rand Paul’s votes.

if he holds up doing THE RIGHT THING until he gets something for himself he does not deserve it.

Trumps reply should be that if he does that then Trump will expose him with extreme prejudice.

“...a bruising primary campaign before the contentious, 12-week runoff has even started.”

bruising primary campaign???

Politicians require that Americans soldiers face lethal enemy fire and they are squeamish about a primary campaign?

This NEEDS deconstructing.

Trump may be the hardest working man to ever hold our highest office.

So with that all that on his plate, he has to lean on his advisors who not are TRULY MAGA in the sense that they are populists.

Stephen Miller is the only one I can think of who has a populist sensibility.

His advisors are STATISTS by nature and will lean toward the "safe" insider choice.

Well when it got out that Trump was leaning toward taking the advice of the stooges who surround him, MAGA pushed back on this forum and throughout the platforms where MAGA speak out.

Trump can read the room and when the voices in the room are MAGA he is going to follow those voices not the stooges employed as his advisors.

CNN got it wrong as it always does.

Trump did NOT grow frustrated just his advisors.

Methinks Trump was probably glad he got MAGA feedback which allowed him not to go against the wishes of those he has worked so hard to represent.

Cornyn has AIPAC money backing him. I have been wondering how this will play out.

With the personal risks Gabbard has taken to expose the workings of the Deep State, she may not be a conservative (yet) but she doesn't deserve the label of "statist."

No, ditch Cornyn and tap Paxton, let’s not miss this opportunity to get a good senator in that seat for a change regardless of everything else.

The delay gives Paxton's surrogates time to poison the well for Cornyn. They've already started.

A bill to restrict voters, CNN?
If Corryn can guarantee the turtle, the NC ex-senator-will-be and others to vote for the procedure, I am prepared to accept him getting endorsed. Senator only for 6 yrs, and he is only one of many. Fixing voting process is for long time, beyond Corryn or Trump.

You might want to re-think your position — Cornyn supports amnesty for illegal aliens, and he supports “red flag” laws.
