Vance Defends Operation Epic Fury After Years of Opposing Interventions
RealClear Politics ^ | March 03, 2026 | Philip Wegmann

On the third day of the new war with Iran, and after years of building a political reputation grounded in opposition to foreign intervention, Vice President JD Vance broke his silence: He supports the strikes and believes the latest adventure abroad is not only prudent but consistent with his and President Trump’s promises not to risk American lives for regime change.

The difference between this conflict and the Global War on Terror, Vance told Jesse Watters of Fox News, was that Trump “is not going to let his country go to war unless there is a clearly defined objective.” The stated aim in this case is to ensure Iran can never develop a nuclear weapon.

“It is pretty clear,” said the former Marine who deployed to Iraq. “It is pretty simple,” concluded the most prominent anti-interventionist in this administration.

But it is also a political liability for the MAGA heir apparent. The vice president rose to that role, in large part, as the vanguard of a strict kind of America First thinking. He endorsed Trump for a second term in a Wall Street Journal op-ed “because I know he won’t recklessly send Americans to fight overseas.” The headline for that 2023 guest essay read: “Trump’s Best Foreign Policy? Not Starting Any Wars.”

The apparent evolution left anti-interventionist allies disappointed. Sohrab Amari, a post-liberal conservative and close friend of the vice president, concluded that Vance “lost the foreign policy war,” bemoaning how a critic of neoconservatism rose to the highest levels of government “only to help implement the foreign-policy preferences of, say, John Bolton or Elliott Abrams.” Conflicting stories further complicated the controversy in New Right circles, with the New York Times simultaneously reporting that Vance had leaned against striking Iran but also pressed for a “go big and go fast” approach.

VP is a good job in that you’re a heartbeat away from the top job and you’re the de facto front-runner for the next cycle if the president is termed-out. But it’s not such a great job in the sense that you “own” all policies and decisions of the administration despite you technically have no actual power or authority over those policies and decisions, cf. John Nance Garner’s famous claim that the gig “is not worth a bucket of warm spit.”

Real Clear Politics embracing the evil and choosing to be stupid.

This is not an intervention; this is literally Trump ending a forever war started by carter and the Globalists 47 years ago.

Iran literally was at war with us this whole-time killing Americans. but for elitist that fact is a bit inconvenient.

Intervention under biden or obama would have meant totally different outcomes and goals. Duh !

I remember the moron Carter doing all this back then. I believe his motto was...Strength through WUSS. He thought he could talk nice to them and they would all get along.

What's going on?!?

First, Megyn Kelly dumps on Trump by suggesting U.S. troops may be dying for Israel or Iran.

Then, today on The Federalist website, John Daniel Davidson also posted his article, "How Israel ‘Chain-Ganged’ The Trump Administration Into War Against Iran".

Now, Real Clear Politics has Philip Wegmann hitting VP Vance for hypocritical behavior for supporting President’s attack against Iran.

Have a growing number of conservatives gone pacifist when confronted by Islamoterrorists?

Carter stabbed Iran and its people and the west in the back HARD, all for his hatred of Jews and eagerness to do the Globalists of that day bidding.

Never liked carter and all the left’s attempts to paint him as some kind of humanitarian, he was a horrible bigot.

We have always had closet posers of conservatism; Trump is really good at making their mask’s slip. If you remember Kelly has already been flighty

I didn’t care for him for many reasons. Mostly because he destroyed the housing market when interest went to 20%.

No kidding. Intervention according to Zerobama meant sending them 1.7 Billion Dollars.

As VP, Vance has access to a lot more sensitive info than he did before.
That has led him to this stance. Simple.

In on echo chambers, this “war” or whatever it may be is the most unpopular in decades and not just on the left.

"Non-interventionist" does not equal "isolationist."

So 2, week-long actions against Iran with 6 causalities, and 1 day of action against Venezuela with zero is somehow just as bad as 20 years and 7,085 U.S. dead in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Never liked carter and all the left’s attempts to paint him as some kind of humanitarian, he was a horrible bigot.

He was always a scumbag. Just like when he ran for GA gov, and cozied up to Wallace to get the nomination, then told a Black pastor "don't worry about all that...you have to act like a racist to get elected in this state." And then in his first speech as gov did a 180.Then later, with his reputation as president in tatters, he starts hammering in a few nails, and the media lauds him as a saint.
