As a jazz fan, I've been on a Bill Evans kick for a long while now. He's got a lot of soul. He demonstrates why AI will never replace humans. (videos)

Here's probably the best piece he wrote:

Waltz For Debby
And here's probably his best performance:
The Bill Evans Trio playing “My Foolish Heart”

Here's another jazz genius, similar to Bill:
Chet Baker - Leaving

I despise AI-generated audio, video, and text.

That said, yes, in many use cases, AI-generated music *will* replace human-made music.

When I think of Bill Evans, the first song that comes to mind is Blue in Green. Often credited to Miles Davis, Evans is a co-writer, quite possibly the primary composer.

I disagree.

I don't think AI can replace human art. It lacks soul. It's too perfect. It's shallow like a pretty girl friend who has never had a serious thought or suffered something painful and overcome that pain.

Humans have depth and pain and soul.

Art is so much more than a pretty picture.

For some not familiar with him, here is a pretty good background article from 2022.

I think Miles might have ripped off Bill for a bunch of stuff.

Listen to his music, Frank. It will speak to your heart and soul.

I took a writing class a long time ago. The instructor said, a novel is written by the writer and the reader. The writer may speak it, but the reader has to live it, and think it, and dream it, and imagine it.

It's the same for music. When you hear it, it's your soul that listens and is moved by it.

It's your music. The musician just gives it to you.

AI only mimics us. Art is not mimicry. Art is original.

Only humans (or perhaps animals) can create art.

Evans and Baker shared a demon.

Both were so smooth and pure.

What would you consider the best two or three albums for someone to try?

I always hate that kind of question for some artist I like because it is difficult to answer if a lot of respected works are in the mix. Not like it’s a pop artist’s greatest hits album.

In Jr.High School I had the Waltz For Debby LP.

I must admit, I first heard of Bill through Metheny/Mays “September Fifteenth”, which is the day of Bill’s passing....

I think Scott LaFaro’s tragic accident, led Bill deeper into heroin addiction.

Anyone who has done drugs or knows drink has touched the outer edge of that demon's territory.

My point of this thread is that humans will not be replaced by AI.

I think the bigger factor, is have we really reached the point of diminishing returns that there really aren’t new frontiers for music anymore?

People still listen to the works of Beethoven, Mozart, Bach etc. without new symphonies being heard by the masses. Same for Jazz and Pop/Rock. People still want to hear The Beatles/Stones/Who etc. Where is the new ground?
