Trump Throws In the Towel on Minneapolis Surge
National Review ^ | 02/15/2026 | The Editors

Posted on 02/16/2026 10:51:52 AM PST by L.A.Justice

President Trump sent Tom Homan to Minneapolis to declare victory and go home, and so he has.

Trump’s border czar announced the end of the ICE surge that had roiled the city and our national politics. Homan says ICE is getting more cooperation from county jails in handing over incarcerated illegal aliens, and immigration authorities have detained many of the illegal immigrants they had been targeting. It’s not clear how extensive the supposed new cooperation is, but Homan certainly forged a better relationship with state and city officials.

The big story here is that semiorganized resistance on the streets, with the support of the elected leadership in Minnesota and Minneapolis, made the aggressive federal enforcement too painful to continue. Usually, in sheer political terms, when mobs are arrayed against law enforcement, law enforcement prevails.

In Minneapolis, though, the public considered the DHS operation arbitrary and heavy-handed, and the officers in camouflage lost the image battle to the agitators. Trump, who is attuned to optics and willing to shift gears at a moment’s notice, realized it and stood down.

President followed his instincts and told Homan to end Minnesota operation...

I know that some FR members wanted President to send federal troops to Minnesota...And arrest Governor Walz and Mayor Frey...None of those things happened...

I am annoyed that Mayor Frey and Governor Walz are "celebrating" the end of this surge...But, I think President made the right decision...

Didn't Minnesota start working with ICE and turning over illegals to ICE?

If I'm right, that's a win for Trump and American. The Dims are the ones who lose because there's less Dim-generated chaos to report about.

Total garbage, Never trump rag writes a piece of propaganda against Trump. NR has been a known TDS outlet for years.

Only fools believe what they write.

Truth is they forced the state to comply, got the police to finally help and they are drawing down resources not needed there and focusing on better opportunities. This is not even the first hit piece that tried this lie in the media.

The National Review neocons are continuing their stupidity. There will continue to be a steady stream of illegals being deported from Minnesota. Count on it.

I want “Minnesota nice” to come back! I want to be invited to Minnesota Lutheran buffets even though I am no longer a Lutheran.

And I want Somali savages out of our country!

Yup. The locals here are furious that they gave in and will allow ICE to pick them up at the jails. . They are also furious that they can’t spend their days yelling and chasing them around. They will have to follow ICE to the next city on the list.

Surely surrender in the Twin Cities will encourage the Red Guard thugs to stand down eslewhere now to celebrate their great working relationship with ICE and Trump, right? Surely.........

George Soros and his anti American money paid for protesters to get out there and fight ICE. 2 people died that fought them and we were lucky it wasn’t George Floyd 2.0, except Trump learned that you put a stop by bringing in Tom Homan and making a deal to get out the criminal illegals now, and back off the other for the fraudsters to be revealed. It’s not over,by any sense, but merely removed from the media circus.

It really was not as bad as I had expected from reading the healline. The advice about starting more vigorous work site enforcemnt is what I agee with, in conjunction with removing criminals.

They could not resist the dig of Trump throwing in the towel, which may not have been the case.

The two deaths were made to order for the protesters and the media. And I think that the fraud investigation is taking the most energy now.

I guess the 11th Airborne Division in Alaska got tired of being on standby and are back in the warm barracks now.

Leftists have as a top 3 tenet always lay blame

Anyone, particularly the national review, either should know this or does know it and has no clue how to apply it

Democrats always lay blame. They will use their so called conservative media enablers to do this. They do it for control among other conveniences

There will never be an admission that Trumpnwas correct

Anyone waiting for this in order to move ahead with a constritutional agenda is delusional. No exaggeration

The National Review writers do state that it was not a good precedent...

This is a bad precedent, but immigration enforcement doesn’t rise and fall exclusively based on what happens in Minneapolis.

Trump clearly won in Minnesota.

Walz’s career is officially over. He said himself he will not be in politics any longer

Others like the wretched Keith Ellison will have no future either.

It was a decapitation strike

using a citizen journalist, Trump exposed the massive fraud in Minneapolis, and exposed the Left’s migration-fraud-demoralization project. It doesn’t mean its over, but the enemy has been exposed.

No, we did not see Marxists being tossed from helicopters, but Trump achieved basic goals with a minimum of effort.
