How California Democrats manipulate the governor’s race
The California Post ^ | 2/4/26 | Larry Elder

Posted on 02/05/2026 8:20:21 PM PST by Bullish

California Democrats know how to manipulate the field of candidates to produce the governor’s race they want. That’s what I learned in the 2021 California gubernatorial recall election against Gov. Gavin Newsom. It is not a loss that gives me sleepless nights. It is, however, annoying that people, including veteran political analysts and pundits, get wrong exactly what happened. Why? Because the truth is instructive as to how Democrats maneuver, and what could be happening in the gubernatorial race in 2026.

The link says it’s to the NY post but for whatever reason it goes to the new California post, so I had to excerpt it as per FR policy.

The banner read "New York Post" when I went there. I think it's the same company as the CP.

The California Post is an American conservative daily tabloid newspaper published in Los Angeles, California. It serves as the California counterpart to the New York Post, and is owned by News Corp. The newspaper began publishing on January 26, 2026.

News Corp chief executive Robert Thomson said that “the [California] Post will play a crucial role in engaging and enlightening readers, who are starved of serious reporting and puckish wit.”

The California Post has over 80 staff in their headquarters on the Fox Studios lot in Century City. Papps said that the tabloid would also have reporters in Sacramento, San Diego and San Francisco. The paper will comprise local news and content from the New York Post.

California must decouple into another state so some people have representation.

When I went to post this entire article here that I found on the Calif Post, FR informed me that “the NY Post must be excerpted”. Which was slightly puzzling to me since I linked to the article I found on the CA Post using the URL of the article there and hadn’t even visited the NY Post at all. Evidently this was posted to the CA Post from the NY Post itself which would explain the NY post URL being the only one listed in the address bar. So I edited the post down to less than 300 words so I could excerpt it here.

I will not bother trying to post articles here from the Ca Post in the future unless it’s really worthy of excerpting it.

Some voters wanted Schwarzenegger to be governor — and voted for the recall to pass. Some voters wanted Bustamante — and voted for the recall to pass.

I thin Elder got this wrong. There was no groundswell of people who wanted Bustamante - he was pretty uninspiring. There were a lot of people who just wanted Gray Davis put - they were more adamant about that than who replaced him.

What really killed Gray Davis' governorship was his decision to triple the registration fee for a car.

This was going to put a huge dent in the number of people who could drive a car. (Legally.)

It made it impossible for whole classes of people to afford their car. So, there were people who may not have liked Schwarzenegger, and maybe voted for Gray Davis, who had no choice to vote for the recall.

Gray Davis pointed the gun at a huge chunk of his own constituents. Smart.

Gavin Newsom was smarter. He actually made it so an even larger chunk of people won't be able to drive. By requiring all cars on the road to be EVs, he made it so only the wealthy can drive. Maybe even some upper middle class people won't be able to.

But Gavin made it so it doesn't go into effect until 2035. By then he'll be long out of office in CA. And even past his second presidential election. (Assuming he gets into office, which I consider a long shot.)

If you are a governor and you want to pass some stupid law, make sure it takes effect after you leave office.

And shame on Larry Elder for pretending the 14% of people who voted for McClintock don't exist.

The California post is a sister to the NY post and just opened up last Monday. Their mission statement says they plan to do the same type of reporting that they do in the NY post.

What it boils down to is that Democrats have a very disciplined party that can get it’s politicians to toe the line to the party’s strategic advantage. They know how to play the game. The Republicans could learn a few things.

The article explains why Schwarzenegger won with the recall and Larry Elder didn’t. The RATs had a big name RAT running for the recall with Schwarzenegger so the recall vote went over 50%. They made sure no big name RAT was running for the recall with Elder. So the recall itself failed.
