At the Mayfair Collection in Wauwatosa, the parking lot at Golden Nest Pancakes and Cafe is always packed. But now, some customers feel like they’re caught in the middle.
It’s because of this sign inside: “Please do not enter if you smell of marijuana. Golden Nest Pancake and Cafe is a family restaurant and this is unappealing while guests are dining.”
“I always come to Golden Nest. It’s one of my favorite breakfast places, actually. I’ve been here twice this week,” said customer Iyani Raines. “If you have a preference, that’s one thing, but I just don’t feel like everyone’s bothered because we’re not even sitting in close proximity where we can smell one another. It’s a restaurant. It’s gonna smell like eggs.”
Wayne Doney, the restaurant's general manager, says the sign went up months ago.
“I think this is fairly hilarious at all that this has become an issue,” said Doney. “A lot of our customers were complaining about individuals that we were allowing in the restaurant that smelled like marijuana or a skunk, actually, which is how they attributed it.”
Some say they feel the sign is targeted.
“Basically, a group of young individuals. A group of African American individuals that you do not want visiting,” said customer Yolanda. “You cannot exclude someone for smelling like marijuana just like you cannot exclude someone for having body odor. I don’t see the difference.”
Doney says that’s not the case.
“There’s no demographics about it. I don’t care if you’re old, young, doesn’t matter,” said Doney. “We’ve never had any other issues with any other odor before.”
“I think marijuana was very intentional because had they said no smelling of smoke, then maybe everyone wouldn’t feel so targeted,” said Raines. “Why can’t I come in and have breakfast? My money is as good as anyone else’s.”
Others say they’re worried other restaurants may follow suit.
“It’s disappointing because you’re gonna start putting that everywhere, basically saying that we are not allowed here. And it’s Black History Month and I’m proud to say that. Take the sign down,” said Yolanda.
The restaurant says they don’t plan on taking the sign down.

Well, if they smelled strong enough, the customers might order seconds, or thirds.

So glad I don’t have to take DART to downtown Dallas anymore. The trains always smelled of skunk weed.
If Yolanda thinks that only blacks smell like weed, I've got a couple coffee shops in Williamsburg to take her to.
I wish we had some push back here in Greater Phoenix. Part of the reason we bought a new house was because our old neighbors were a bunch of itinerant laborers (about ten at a time 8 vehicles parked on front lawn and in street) smoking so much weed on the weekends it leeched into our yard, bleagh!
If I lived in Milwaukee, I would eat there. Low-carb diet be damned.
A lot of skunk smell lately.
I was in a gun store looking at riflescopes. There were two young guys looking at handguns.
The manager went up to them and said “You two smell of marijuana. I’m going to have to ask you to leave the store.” They did.

Weed stinks. Even the interstate highways reek of it. Whatever strain is smoked around here smells very literally like skunk.
Modern pot smells like a dead skunk wrapped up in a whale carcass sitting in the midday July sun.

The stank of weed is vomit inducing.
Not just the awful smell, but also the fact you don’t want people acting stoned/high in your establishment.
I think it’s the same ‘strain’, everywhere. What causes the skunk smell? Too much THC? China THC???
I had no idea it smelled like skunk ... and, complained, once, while visiting family ... I could smell it in the hall. I called the front desk and said a skunk was loose, somewhere on their floor.
Our relative’s adult kids got the biggest laugh, when we told them the story. They said, That’s POT!
That was in NY ... now, we smell it, EVERYWHERE ... in grocery stores, restaurants, etc.
It’s disgusting.
