President Donald Trump ripped the decision to keep Bill Belichick out of the Pro Football Hall of Fame on the first ballot on Wednesday.
Belichick didn’t get the 40 votes needed from the 50-person panel of media members and other Hall of Famers, ESPN reported, citing sources. The snub drew outrage from across the sports spectrum, including Patrick Mahomes, LeBron James, Jimmy Johnson and others.
Trump added his voice to the chorus in a post on Truth Social, while also criticizing the NFL’s dynamic kickoff rules.
"It is the same mindset that gave pro football the new and unwatchable ‘Sissy’ Kickoff Rule, that made it possible for Bill Belichick to not be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Both are ridiculous and should be overturned!" the president posted.
Trump has routinely criticized the NFL for its new kickoff rules, which were established ahead of the 2024 season and tweaked going into 2025.
Belichick was set to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom during Trump’s first term. However, the former New England Patriots head coach turned it down after the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.
Belichick, who is currently the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, was 302-165 in his career as a head coach between the Patriots and the Cleveland Browns. He won six titles with Tom Brady as the head coach of the Patriots before he mutually parted ways with the franchise after the 2023 season.
He served as a defensive assistant under Bill Parcells with the New York Giants from 1979-1991. The team won two Super Bowls in that time.

I don’t mind the new kickoff rules. Seems to inject more strategy. More of an issue imo is they need to narrow the goal posts again. FG kickers are too good.
I honestly think some of these HOF voters didn’t vote for him because they think he’s going to coach in the NFL again.
But I may get used to it in a couple of years. We'll see.
It was a bigger deal to me when the MLB decided to use universal DH rule because that changed the game fundamentally.

Belichick and I are about the same age. My girlfriend is 61 years old. And I must admit that there are times when I ask myself if I’m guilty of robbing the cradle.
Looking at his girlfriend, I can understand why he is tired.
Listening to her? I can understand why he is tired.
In this new age of media and political correctness, ALL AWARDS HAVE BECOME a joke.
Even the HOF.
Bill got cancelled because he was TOO white and NEVER sucked up to Elite Stream Sports Media.
I was more shocked that he got hired by Elite Stream Sports Media after he left coaching than I was shocked he didn’t get into the HOF.
It is not that HOF places ANY value on character and the cheating scandals mattered.
It elected Ray Lewis on the first ballot and just because he doesn’t have tear drop tattoos doesn’t mean hasn’t taken a life.

But ideally, I would like a President who leaves civil society alone and doesn’t comment.
At least that’s how America used to be, before the marxist notion that “everything is political” infected public discourse.
I suppose that’s impossible in 2026 USA. Many Americans feel politics is like American Idol and our leaders need to be Simon Cowell or Ryan Seacrest.
