Star New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who's played a key role in the meteoric rise of Pro Bowl quarterback Drake Maye, was accused of felony strangulation, Massachusetts court records revealed on Tuesday.
Diggs, 32, also faces a misdemeanor assault charge, stemming from an alleged incident that happened on Dec. 2, Dedham District Court records showed.
That would have been a day after New England beat the New York Giants, 33-15, on "Monday Night Football."
He's set to be arraigned on Jan. 23, which would be two days ahead of the AFC championship game, according to court records.
"The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations," according to a Patriots statement.
"We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary."
The veteran wideout has played in all 16 of New England's games so far this season, making 82 catches for 970 yards as Maye's favorite target.
Diggs became a star in the NFL during his time with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills, where he was a 1,000-yard receiver for six consecutive seasons.
The Patriots, fighting for the AFC's No. 1 seed, finish the regular season on Sunday by playing host to the Miami Dolphins.
“We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club," the NFL said in a statement. "We have no further comment at this time.”
Diggs recently welcomed a newborn baby boy with girlfriend and rapper Cardi B.
NFL Thug PING!.................
He tried to strangle Josh Allen?
Diggs has often been annoying and disgruntled, not violent.
If this had been a mediocre player on 2nd string he would have already been fired................
The Cowboys have his brother who is perpetually hurt.............
Another ‘roided-up black man long on anger, short on impulse control?
Commenters here have him convicted already.
Hmmm.
More like a very physically strong, testosterone (or synthetic testosterone ) blooded, dude who every week fights against bigger dudes who want to rip his head off at first chance ..having to deal with someone who he is suspicious of. Namely, he would be suspicious of a plot to steal his money...or he is a total paranoid schiz. With big muscles?
By the way, who did he supposedly strangle? Some mistress trying to extort him? Or Cardi B cause she sang WAP?
Overall, a HUGE promotional fail for NFL. They deserve it
From here is Bills Mafia land:
I was gonna warn you Pats fans about how Diggs can get during the post season (attitude off the charts). I guess now, I won’t have to.
Of course, our coach will bench/suspend/release the guy for a mere, unsubstantiated allegation... as opposed to waiting until the tight-end is actually arrested for murder before taking action.
just sayin...
"Oh you're so strong, choke me" and then you're toast.
The hashtag #MeToo
Wouldn't that be justifiable?
Or does that not apply to black athletes?
Cardi B would kick Stefon’s A$$.
I think the allegations are being made by someone else.
You can take the black out of the ghetto...
Should all people be punished for accusations without due process?
You are presumed innocent in a court until proven guilty. If he was presumed innocent, he never would have been arrested.
His live in personal chef. The police report is online.
