Maria and the family fled Villa Trapp in Austria not by foot over the mountains – that would have taken them to Germany, not Switzerland – but by train to Italy (formerly Croatia), where Georg had grown up and earned a military pension

Sad. They were magnificent.

We saw that movie on TV almost every year when my kids were young. They loved singing along. “Do, a deer a female deer ........ I might watch it again this year somewhere. YouTube maybe.

I’ll be 90 in June. Still healthy and active at 89, not surprised that she is too.

Maria was a martinet. She would not allow any of the children date or marry, even as adults. 1 girl eloped and married. The show business from which they made a living, was foremost in her world. 60 Minutes, if I recall, did a piece on them. (Could have been PBS; it was decades ago that I watched it.)

The song “Do, Re, Me” actually is actually very dark and sinister when you analyze the lyrics.

Do: A dear, a female dear.
Although a “female dear” can apply to any female loved one, in the context of the song, it most likely refers to a gangster’s moll.

Re: A drop of golden sun
“Golden sunshine” is a street name for marijuana

Mi: A name I call myself
If you call yourself by a name other than your own, it is probably because you are engaged in illegal activity such as dealing drugs.

Fa: A long, long way to run
From the mountains of Laos to the streets of Los Angeles is a long, long way to run opiates

Sol: A needle pulling thread
The needle is used to inject liquid drugs such as heroin. A “thread” is probably the same thing as a “line,” one cubic ounce

La: A note that follows Sol
The need for another fix, shows that the heroin user is addicted.

Ti: A drink with jam and bread
The drink, most likely alcoholic, is taken with “jam,” another street name for marijuana. Payment is made with “bread,” or cold cash. No credit cards, ATM cards, money orders or checks are used in drug deals

That will bring us back to Do
The deal is complete

Not sure what this is about or why it matters?

One of the last Pearl Harbor sneak attack survivors recently died at 101.
That matters.

Thats great! When I was in my twenties I didn’t want to live past 43 because I thought the quality of life wouldn’t be worth it. Now that I am almost 70, I hope I can be like you.

growing up my brothers were auditioning for the play in the small town I lived in. My mom took us kids on vacation drive to see are grandparents about 1200-mile drive. There were 6 of us kids in the car and my mom. We were singing all of the songs the whole trip. so that my brothers would be ready for the audition. My two brothers have great voices two of my sisters were ok singers but myself and my oldest sister were tone deaf. I don’t know how my mom got through the trip with her sanity 6 kids oldest 16 the youngest 7 and at least two kids that had voices that should not be listened to by anyone.

I have an uncle in Vermont, probably in his mid 80s? He has been in music careers his whole life, and I think he has been friends with any surviving Von Trapps for many years. He has been involved in local band and orchestra groups, as well as he seems to be a well-known piano tuner/technician in his community.

I grew up as the crow flies about 5 miles from their lodge.

As the car crawls, about 30 miles.

I met them once, in the 1970s.

Very nice folks from what I could tell.

I had a chance to visit there in May 2024. The ride going to the mansion is full of spectacular scenery. You cannot get in to the mansion but you can see it across a beautiful small lake.
