Trump to honor USA 'Miracle on Ice' team during Congressional Gold Medal Act signing

President Donald Trump will honor the 1980 United States men's Olympic hockey team that famously defeated the Soviet Union on their way to earning a gold medal in Lake Placid during the Congressional Gold Medal Act signing on Friday.

"President Trump will honor the legendary 1980 Olympic men’s ice hockey team whose ‘Miracle on Ice’ resulted in a historic and symbolic victory against the Soviet Union," White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital. "This triumph fueled a resurgence of national pride as Americans across the country watched Team USA unexpectedly take home the Gold Medal. No one is more committed to honoring American greatness and patriotism than President Trump."

The team, which featured amateurs and college players, completed the "Miracle on Ice" in a stunning upset over the Soviets, who were considered the favorites and an international powerhouse for years. The victory catapulted the Americans for a chance to win gold, which the Stars and Stripes accomplished by defeating Finland two days later.

Mike Eruzione, Jim Craig, Buzz Schneider and the widow and children of the late Herb Brooks are slated to be in attendance.

The Soviets had famously walloped the United States in a pre-Olympic exhibition game at Madison Square Garden, but the Americans got hot at the right time.

The Russians famously benched longtime starting goalie Vladislav Tretiak after he allowed a goal with just a second left in the first period that tied the game at two.

The Americans trailed, 3-2, entering the third, but Mark Johnson tied the game midway through the final period. Less than two minutes later, Eruzione scored what was eventually the game-winning goal and was mobbed on the ice.

“The event, which will be held in the Oval Office at 3 p.m., will feature hockey stars from the gold medal-winning team, including captain Mike Eruzione, goaltender Jim Craig and forward Buzz Schneider. The widow, son and daughter of deceased coach Herb Brooks are also expected to attend.”

fun fact: while I have never met any of the US team, I did accidentally run into Viacheslav “Slava” Fetisov from the Soviet team at a bookstore event. Got a photo autograph and everything. Not planned. Right place and right time and I had just seen the documentary “Red Army” which was about the team a few weeks prior. 🏒

Speaking of Al Michaels, there are calls for him to retire after last night’s Buccaneers-Falcons game, because he barely raised his voice when the Falcons kicked the winning field goal at the end of the game. It was quite the contrast from his Olympics call. One commented that it sounded like Michaels bet on Tampa Bay.

We’ve had anti Americans in the White House since and this was one of the most America- boosting events

The media is freaking vague

Don’t know when. Don’t no where

It’s no where on tv now

Supposed to be at 3. No indication if it’s eastern or central

This is a gigantic event

If you can find the documentary version, it’s great, too. Shows the real players and Herb Brooks, a few years after it happened, but before Herb passed. Even some of the Soviet players were interviewed. Extraordinary.

This is ancient history to most people covering/watching it.

Don’t get me wrong, it was an exciting time in my life. But,folks under 40 have no memory of it and cannot really comprehend the meaning.

But, gather the seniors around and break out the ‘member berries.

Over time, it becomes much harder to have events that truly united the country, we are so divided now. Sadly 9/11 probably will be the last time this country unites for anything.

Always the rallying patriot

For anyone else- American history is vital. People need to know our history. Our country needs to know and the younger generation did not get it in school.

I sure as heck showed the kids around here this story and then Argo

Everyone hands iur country over to government s books and Disney then they bitch that were divided

He should first honor the flyers for kicking the asses of the Soviet red army team and making them leave the ice like little girls.

That Flyers team was almost 100% Canadian in its composition. I believe Paul Holmgren was the only American on the roster.

I got to talk to Craig Patrick who was the assistant manager of that 1980 Olympic team. At a charity event he brought his championship rings that included two Stanley Cup rings. I asked which he was proudest of and he didn’t hesitate to answer. The 1980 Olympic ring was the one he was most proud of.

For folks who weren’t around then, it hard to explane how much winning that game against the Russian professionals meant to the nation. It was big.
