What Teenagers Are Saying About ‘6-7’ and the Era of ‘Brain Rot’
NY Times ^ | December 4, 2025 | The Learning Network

“Cooked.” “Low-key.” “Sus.” And now, the cryptic “6-7.” In her recent article, “What Does ‘6-7’ Mean? Maybe Tweens Don’t Want You to Know,” Callie Holtermann explores the latest slang trends baffling adults and taking over classrooms.

She highlights the phenomenon of “6-7,” a phrase as ubiquitous as it is meaningless. “‘Six-seven’ feels a bit like a nonsense grenade,” Ms. Holtermann writes. She asks if today’s slang is simply “brain rot” or rather a “gleeful obfuscation” designed to keep older generations in the dark.

We asked students to weigh in. Is “6-7” actually funny? Is it annoying? And what does it say about their generation? They told us about the joy of inside jokes, the desire to have a language their parents can’t decode, and the fear that “brain rot” might actually be rotting their brains. In the end, many agreed, as one student put it: “Slang is inevitable, just don’t try and understand it.”

_________

“Current slang shows that our generation is creative, funny, and always switching things up. A lot of our slang is random on purpose, which shows that we don’t take everything too seriously and we like humor that’s playful and unpredictable. It also reveals how connected we are to social media, since trends spread fast and new phrases pop up almost every day. “ …

However, plenty of students are just as annoyed by the ‘6-7’ trend as adults are.

I find it hard to concentrate in middle school, and it’s not the teachers’ fault. They’re great. The real problem is just those two numbers, 6 and 7. It was funny for the first day — no, the first three hours. It has become so overused that just typing them out genuinely fries my brain.

It is my understanding, from the song it originated, that it is a reference to the 69 sexual act, because 67 +2 makes for 69.

A kid might only be repeating it because it’s cool to repeat and it tweaks the nerves of adults.

I asked my teen boys what 67 means and they said, "It means six seven."

And then they laughed at me and that was the end of it.

“designed to keep older generations in the dark.”

I keep the younger generations in the dark by using standard English.

https://www.cleveland.com/news/2025/12/why-people-are-chanting-six-seven-this-weekend-what-it-actually-means.html

The trend traces back to the 2025 drill-rap track Doot Doot (6 7) by rapper Skrilla, whose repeated lyric “6-7” became the foundation for a viral meme.

Social media users, especially on TikTok and Instagram, lifted the refrain and began to chant “six-seven” across videos, often paired with playful gestures or exaggerated intonation.

Adding fuel to the trend: basketball star LaMelo Ball, officially 6-foot-7, and other young athletes popped up in meme edits linked to the song, helping embed “six-seven” in sports and youth culture, according to People.

According to Georgetown University, despite its ubiquity, experts caution that “six-seven” carries no fixed meaning. Linguists said the appeal lies not in its literal content, but in its absurdity, rhythm and the sense of belonging it brings to those who know about it.

When Jack Ryan’s campaign for an open United States Senate seat in Illinois began in 2003, the Chicago Tribune newspaper and WLS-TV, the local ABC affiliate, sought to have his records released. Both Jeri and Jack agreed to make public their divorce records, but not their custody records, saying the latter’s release could be harmful to their son.

On June 18, 2004, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider agreed to release the custody files. The decision went against both parents’ direct requests and reversed the decision to seal the papers in the child’s best interest. It was revealed that six years earlier, Jeri accused Jack of asking her to perform sexual acts with him in public and in sex clubs in New York, New Orleans and Paris. Jeri described one venue as “a bizarre club with cages, whips, and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling.” Jack denied the allegations.

Although Jeri only made a brief statement, and refused to comment on the matter during the campaign, the disclosure led Jack to withdraw his candidacy; his main opponent, Barack Obama, then won the 2004 United States Senate election in Illinois, flipping the Senate seat from Republican to Democratic.

I know the story...the GOP then wanted Mike Ditka to run for the seat and he would’ve been a shoe-in to win- it probably would not have been close....Ditka declined and the GOP had to search for another candidate (a black guy whose name i don’t remember)...

The irony is Ditka was an out spoken obama hater years later- but he could’ve prevented it all had he accepted the GOP’s invite to run as their candidate.

So what Jefferson was saying was "Hey! You know, we left this England place because it was bogus. So if we don't get some cool rules ourselves, pronto, we'll just be bogus too." Yeah?

6/7 is not slang, its a mind virus carried by brains that are easily controlled externally. It consumes attention, destroys focus and is a feel good distraction. Its a mental condition.
