The price of lithium is way down from its 2022-23 peak. Piedmont Lithium (now calling itself just “Piedmont”, snicker) was getting permits for a mine west of Charlotte, but they’ve pretty much given up now due to the price drop.

Too bad: the geologists and the community relations rep were nice. They gave a nice talk to our environmental science co-op and then took us to what was going to be the mine site but is still old fields, instead. We got to see spodumene in the wild, which was cool.

Under a supervolcano?

“The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dum... shadow and flame.”

“But the mine sits at the heart of a collision between mineral demand and environmental and cultural preservation”

Of course. A federal judge will block it.

It’s not under it. It formed in a shallow lake over it.

My family drove through that area (U.S. 95 between Boise and Winnemucca) in 1968—some of the bleakest desert I have ever seen. But if some local tribe declares it is sacred land to them, there will be a long legal battle with the Democrats siding with the Indians.

My 86-year-old wife is 50% injun.

Dated a full-blooded Native American who liked to call herself Squaw. Wanted me to call her Squaw.

One day in the airport, we were separated, a little. So...... I yelled, not too loud, "Squaw, where are you?" "Squaw, where are you?" Some of the other travelers were aghast. She comes running towards me, laughing, saying "here I am!" The politically correct aghast people probably still complain about that day

Tribal communities, including members of the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe, have accepted a fat check from competing interests expressed concern about the mine’s potential impact on ancestral lands, springs, and archaeological sites.

Fixed.

I wonder what needs protected?

Of course we can’t get the lithium.

We have to buy from China, our best buddy, where they don’t care much about how it’s mined, and then ship it on ships powered by heavy fuel oil across the Pacific.

Yes, that makes perfect environmental sense.

This is the habitat of the endangered tri-anus desert lithium snorting wombat. No mining allowed.
