Why it's important to always go swimming in pairs.
Or in large groups to improve your odds...
But in all seriousness, I did quite a bit of swimming in the waters of the east cost of Oz, Sharks are just a fact of life there and attacks are rare. Shark patrols are vigilant in most popular areas and beaches do get closed frequently.
From what I have read, sharks don’t like the taste of humans. Their attacks are basically them checking out the next meals flavor. As soon as they taste human, they leave but the damage has been done.
One benefit for being bitter, I guess.
Swimming in groups in shark infested waters is like shark bite roulette....
That way, all ya gotta do is out swim one person.
“Sharks rarely attack more than one human”
I can’t help wondering how deep the water was - and if their bathing suit bottoms were in situ....
“Experts say a shark rarely attacks more than one person.”

True for Great Whites (Carcharodon carcharias); not as accurate if you’re referencing Bull Sharks (Carcharhinus leucas).
Or remember the ‘camping in bear country’ rule (Take no one you cannot outrun), swim with poor swimmers.
