Why do so many here get butt-hurt when these things are pointed out? The Indians lived here, the white man showed up, we expanded, and they lost. Its a fact. Thats just how life goes. And thats how its gone throughout human history. There are winners and losers.
The contradiction of developing a document saying “all men are created equal” while owning slaves is a historical fact. No sense in hiding it. The founders were great, courageous men, but not perfect.
The need for a nice, santized history where the white colonists were perfect, the Indians were uniformly savages, and slaves just kind of didn’t exist is ridiculous. History isn’t a Saturday morning cartoon.
I’ve watched parts of the series. And listened to an interview with Ken Burns on CNBC. He was uniquivocally clear that George Washington was the greatest man of his age, and without him, there is no successful revolution and no United States.
“all men are created equal” while owning slaves is a historical fact”
The is an example of “historical presentism” where the past is judged by the present day values. Slaves were not considered equal, anywhere, ever in history. Britain ended the slave trade, not slavery.
