Ancestor of all US "Democrats"? Few people know that 'The Night Watch' was originally much larger when it was transferred to Amsterdam City Hall in 1715. Something happened that would be unimaginable today. It doesn't fit through the doors. So, the mayor has the work trimmed on all four sides.
Thanks for posting.
And then there was the Last Supper:
In 1652, a doorway was cut into the wall of the refectory at the Santa Maria delle Grazie monastery in Milan, which damaged Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper by removing the portion of the mural that depicted Jesus’s feet. This happened because the painting was in a state of disrepair, and the monks did not realize the artistic value of the work. The doorway was later bricked up, but the damage to the painting remains, though modern digital restorations can show what the original looked like.
