There needs to be a twenty year moratorium on all immigration.

From everywhere. Until everyone here is fully assimilated.

Longer if the assimilation should prove sluggish.

Agree. This was a policy position that was the rule for decades:

Grok:

“1924-1965”

“National Origins Quota System (1924 Act + 1952 McCarran-Walter Act)“

“Longest sustained restrictive era; annual legal immigration averaged ~150,000–200,000 for 40 year“

Getting “everyone” assimilated and totally zero immigration are not complimentary goals. Economically we will be weaker with zero immigration, and economic malaise will produce more cultural ghettos instead of assimilation.

We don’t need zero legal immigration. We need smart legal immigration that serves the country above serving any immigrant group interest. It would include a return to nation by nation limits on the numbers of immigrants no matter what basis. It would also mean smart immigration that discovered, looked at and understood the skill areas we had the most need, as a nation, for the nation, not for giant corporations building themselves up on lower-wage H1B labor while qualified Americans remain unemployed.

We need some legal immigration but our current system cannot do it in the best interest of the country.

Agreed. We’ve been swamped by both illegal and legal immigration. How about a little sanity where we decide who WE NEED and WANT? Do we want legal immigrants who will take jobs from Americans by working for less? Legal immigrants who come from countries which don’t value freedom and hard work? Legal immigrants who want to work the system? We’ve taken our share of immigrants over the last many years. Let them go elsewhere for a change. (Or stay in their native countries and improve things there.)

I would make an exception for spouses and maybe their parents, if they are past child producing age. Otherwise, no more economic migrants. We have our own underclass that needs to work.

I say we drop it to 150,000 and those have to have something we need. Strictly checked for income and ability to pay their way.

No public assistance of any kind to be offered PERIOD.
