Ireland’s media regulator began an investigation into social media platform X on Wednesday over concerns it is not giving users a chance to appeal content moderation decisions and that its internal complaint-handling systems are not easy to access.
The probe, the first opened by the regulator in its role supervising the compliance of platforms established in Ireland with the European Union’s Digital Services Act, will assess Elon Musk-owned X’s compliance with parts of the law. […]
The investigation arose from concerns held by the Irish regulator’s supervision team, as well as information provided by a non-governmental organization, HateAid, and a user complaint, the regulator said in a statement.
“Today, we are taking an important step in ensuring a safer online experience for users across the European Union,” said John Evans, the Irish regulator’s digital services commissioner. …

Media regulator = no freedom of speech.
I was on X since 2012 when one night, out of the blue, I received a message while on X that I was suspended, no info given and it took two days to get an email from them to say why, which was only that I was suspended for violating their policy. I had no idea of what that mean. I only ever wrote short sentences to people about their recipes or cute casts and stuff. I reposted some political things I liked which were really just articles found in national online publications.
I first asked that night why was I being suspended, the only place to write them was an appeal which I did. Then I discovered that was my ‘appeal’. A month later I wrote as an appeal my concerns.
My husband discovered someone on X, account only 4 months old, was using my user id and my artist statement, which was on X and on my art website. This person’s location was Ghana. They were asking some kind of communication with Muslims. Because I was suspended there was no account to report this from. I could not report this person on their drop down menu for imitating my account. That account, using my username and my artwebsite address is still active.
After two months they wrote me and told me my account was being closed stating I was ‘inauthentic’ and no further correspondence or reading of anything I might write would be looked at.
This was my appeal. Didn’t matter to them.
“On Sept 22 2025 I was suspended from X for having two accounts on X. If I have two accounts on X I am not aware of it. I have been on X since 2012 under the name of Suesuesbeo9@cox.net or under the user name of @Barbcfineart.com which is mine and the same account.
When I was informed I was suspended from X I had just gone on X at the time and did not know the reason for being suspended but saw the notice written on my page so I did the drop down appeal and asked the question, ‘why am I being suspended from X’? which the reason for was not listed on X but only that I had violated some rule of X and so i asked. It was the next day I looked at my email account and saw the reason was that I had two accounts. I am not aware of having two accounts, nothing has been shown to me to prove this? I don’t know if I accidently was logged out one day long ago and logged back in creating another account or NEVER did this. I really have no knowlege of my having started another account, I just automatically log in on my computer at home, the info is saved under my google passwords. I have done this for years. Because I asked this question under the appeal it did not let me file another appeal and I hoped it would be looked at anyway and resolved but it has been a few weeks and I have since learned I can file an appeal still and so I’m sending this information hoping to help in an appeal to reopen my account. Currently it says my account is permanently in read only mode which means I can’t post, repost or like content.
So, before I knew what was going on my husband, who is on X under his own account, looks up my name on his account to see if this were true when I told him on the first night that I was suspended. My account, which was closed, did not come up. Up comes another account UNDER MY NAME with my Artist Statement, (I am an artist with a website and an Instagram account) and word for word, written as if it is me. It is not. This account is listed as @Barbcfineart/@SOS347685478025 with the artist Statement “Throughout my time as a painter I have made a conscious choice to paint such scenes which I find to be spiritually inspiring and uplifting to the soul” This account shows 342 following 96 followers. This website was started in June 2024. It is not mine, I have nothing to do with that website.Because my account was closed cannot report this individual as imitating my account but it’s pretty obvious being I was on X since it was Twitter back in 2012. The fraudulent account was as I said started in June 2024. The artist statement that was copied is on my X account under my name and was copied word for word on this fraudulent account and claimed to be on X as my own account. This is the artist statement, “Throughout my time as a painter I have made a conscious choice to paint such scenes which I find to be spiritually inspiring and uplift the soul. No DMs”. You can see it also on my Instagram page, and my own artist website which my Instagram page has listed there with my art. I am an artist, hence my artist statement. This other account on X is the fraudulent one and I suspect may be the reason I was suspended for having two accounts, yet it still is on X and my own, which is much older was suspended permanently. Since I wrote under the appeal I have no idea if it is being reviewed or not. I hope my account will be reactivated once you see what I have written is true”.
I included my name and phone number. All I got was an email from them few weeks later saying they were closing my account. Permanently.
Sorry to hear that, but I doubt the EUSSR will help fix your problem; they might in fact compound it.
A fine point. In addition to the issue of attempting to enforce "law" outside the jurisdiction of that "law," there is a not-so-hidden financial component.
The EU Lefties think that "fines" with be a new source of income as their economies are hit by their already idiotic green and illegal migrant issues, not to mention causing capital investment to flee said "jurisdictions."
Sever their underseas cables and blame it on the Russians.
I’m sure they will never even hear of me. I don’t plan to write them.
Yeah, right. "Safer online experience." I read X every day and I have never felt unsafe. If there is content I don't like, I either block the poster or just skip it. It's up to me, not some "regulator" to decide.
Wow, what nightmare! So sorry you are having to go through that.
I had a secretary whose identity was stolen in the early 90s. It made her life absolutely hell.
I still don’t know why that even happened. What that was all about. I’m ‘inauthentic’? but the imitation account is not?
Horrible experience for you. What in the world are those nutcases doing?
My cat has a Twitter account. I read political stuff but almost never comment on those tweets. One of Daisy’s “friends” was working in Moscow and adopted a black cat he named Putin the Nuke. That’s as political as I get there.
Ireland is a EU member state. As such it recognises, for better or worse (99% worse IMO), EU regulations and acts. Similar to federal law and US states.
Generally agree, excepting that the European Union is not a nation, nor "federal" as yet, and the European Commission atop it is run by a cumbersome parliamentary mechanism which appointments which individual "member- states" are not supposed to disobey. This, the actions of the EU against the likes of the Visograd nations, as one example.
The EU level of 'government' in Europe is an expense on the continent which is weighing down their economies. That level of EU-ness has fined Google -- not hq'd in the EU -- €2.95bn of late. In April they fined Meta and Apple, also not hq-d within EU borders. All based on their "Digital Services Act (DSA)." As a supra-government, they are trying to enforce their "rules based order" which is different than the US' version of a "rules based order," both of which are different from other international versions of some "rules based order."
