B-24 crews flew with the bomb bay doors slightly open to dissipate potentially explosive fuel fumes.
The B-24 was notorious for fuel leaks, as its fuel tanks were only partially self-sealing, unlike those of the B-17. The fuel transfer system and main electrical switchgear were located on the forward bulkhead of the bomb bay, where an electrical spark could potentially ignite accumulated vapors.
