“’There’s a growing concern that our international consumers are increasingly opting for domestically produced spirits or imports from countries other than the U.S., signaling a shift away from our great American spirits brands,’ Chris Swonger, president and CEO of the spirits council said in an October statement.”

Did Whiskey go Woke and I missed it?

My Fault. I cut back my drinking quite a bit.

"The issue appears to be twofold. Higher tariffs are discouraging foreign buyers, making it more challenging for spirits companies to stay afloat. Tequila and mezcal sales outpaced whiskey for the first time in 2023.

But Americans are also drinking less than ever. In a July Gallup poll, only 54 percent of U.S. adults said they drink alcohol. That’s the lowest number since 1939, when Gallup began tracking drinking trends."

Notice how they put tariffs first. It's not tariffs. The current young generation is dramatically drink less than other generations.

Soooo...the SNAP people stopped getting whiskey? It wasn’t direct anyway. Through their friends.

MPG whiskeys [they don’t seem like many top-shelf whiskeys to me]:

George Remus

Rossville Union

Eight & Sand

Ezra Brooks

Rebel

Daviess County

Yellowstone

Old Ezra

Penelope

MGP also supplies whiskey to many non-owned brands (e.g., Bulleit, High West), but the above are directly under their portfolio. Availability varies by state.

Before my cancer was detected in early 2024, I often enjoyed a 16 oz beer with my evening meal. The Whipple procedure was hard on my liver and pancreas. This year, I purchased a 6 pack of 12 oz bottles of Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer. I enjoyed the first one and the alcohol hit me much harder than it had in the past. I remained intoxicated for over 4 hours. I don't think I can indulge in alcohol anymore. My liver is no longer playing nice.

I was the bartender growing up. Dad would go through 3 martinis before dinner and a bottle of wine at dinner. Mom preferred a couple scotch and water drinks while dad drank his martinis. I never developed an affinity for hard liquor. I did have a few rum and coke mixes and one tequila sunrise. My stomach was a wreck for days after the tequila sunrise.

Once they banned smoking from bars, it no longer was fun to drink.

And tattoos killed the strip clubs.

Ha! We never have whiskey in the house. Usually beer, rum and tequila. Never developed a taste for that brown swill.

A press release on October 19 doesn’t really count as “just”. The use of the word is intended to imply that the user if the word is on top of things.

“Tequila and mezcal sales outpaced whiskey for the first time in 2023.”

An outrageous lack of taste and refinement.

I wonder if those numbers will hold when the deportations are over.

Nothing “good” ever came from drinking alcohol. Beer is bad enough, but spirits are so much stronger.

Yes, I’m (now) a “teetotaler”. Not alcoholics, but my wife and I decided years ago to give up alcohol. It caused problems and solved NONE!

Being brought up in an alcoholic household, I know from where I speak.

AI Overview
Yes, it is better not to drink alcohol because no level of consumption is completely safe, and even moderate drinking increases health risks like cancer and heart disease. Not drinking is the only way to completely avoid alcohol’s risks and can lead to immediate benefits like better sleep, improved mental clarity, and lower blood pressure.

Just one or an occasional drink is okay, right? Becoming drunk or impaired ALWAYS starts with ONE drink.

DON’T take the FIRST one and you’ll be better off.
