Rap music just vanished from the Billboard Top 40 for the first time in 35 years

For the first time in more than three decades, not a single rap song ranks among the 40 most popular tracks in America.

Last week's Billboard Hot 100 marked the end of a remarkable 35-year streak, after Kendrick Lamar and SZA's "Luther" - a 13-week No. 1 hit - dropped off the chart. With that departure, the genre that once dominated the nation's listening habits found itself completely absent from the chart's upper tier.

Not since February 1990 has the Billboard Hot 100 gone without a rap entry in its upper ranks.

The gap has been widened by Taylor Swift's "The Life of a Showgirl," which has kept all 12 of its songs in the top 40 for three weeks.

Beyond technicalities, the lull points to a deeper shift. Hip-hop's market share - once nearly 30% in 2020 - has slipped to 24% this year. Two years ago, eight rap songs sat in the top 40, while just five years ago, there were 16.

Meanwhile, pop and country acts have borrowed from hip-hop's rhythms and swagger - sometimes blurring the boundaries so completely that the sound persists even when the artists themselves aren't rappers

Besides, everybody is singing along, anyway, so you can’t even hear him.

Personally, though I’d rather go see Ringo’s All-Starr Band.

Yep, an all star Beatle impersonator band, with one Beatle.

Ringo’s All-Starr Band.

I missed them a few years back, friends said it was awesome. Now I may never get another chance....add that to the list.

That’s because of structural changes. These days there’s really no such thing as releasing a single. An album comes out and it’s all on the streaming services and each song gets numbers by themselves. The closest we had to that back in the day was the occasional “single machine” album like Thriller where almost every song wound up released as a single eventually (about a year and half I think). But of course they didn’t release the next single until the previous single started slipping in the charts, not wanting to compete with themselves. If this model had existed back in the 60s probably most Beatles albums would have pulled a similar feat.

Then I heard so many horrible things about Don Henley that I became disillusioned.

He wrote the anti-PC/woke song, Get Over It. How bad can he be?

Wings was actually a pretty darn good band, Jimmy McCullough was a fantastic guitar player. Sadly he couldn’t handle the booze.

Thanks for the explanation. I haven’t kept up with current music for a long time. What I hear is largely a oscillating voice, repetitive, and/or not understandable.

“Don Henley is a liberal and a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party. He has consistently backed Democratic candidates and causes through donations and public statements throughout his career.

“Key indicators of his political stance include:
Donations: He has been a generous donor to Democratic political campaigns, with reports in 2008 indicating over $680,000 in donations to candidates since 1978. In 2018, he donated significantly to Texas Democrats and environmental political action committees, such as the Sierra Club Political Committee of Texas.

“Public Statements & Endorsements: He endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and has been openly critical of Republican figures like Donald Trump.

“Legal Action: He has sued Republican politicians, including California senatorial candidate Chuck DeVore.

“Environmental Activism: Henley has a long history of environmental activism, founding the Walden Woods Project in 1990 and the Caddo Lake Institute in 1993, both aimed at conservation. Environmental protection is cause typically associated with the liberal political agenda in the US.”

In 1980 he forced the group to perform without pay in support of liberal Alan Cranston. Probably that’s what was the impetus for the breakup; everyone didn’t support his political views.

Plus he’s a notorious asshole, but that has nothing to do with his politics.

Good riddance!

I never understood it’s appeal.

I always said, “rap is crap”.

A young plumber was working on the house the other day. He brought something to listen to music, and played Classic Rock. It was good to know the classics have endured with the younger generation.

Rap/HipHop is to music...

...as Ebonics is to the English language.

Good riddance to super low IQ, animal-esque trends!

IIRC, one week the Beatles had Top-40 spots #1, #2, #3, #4, #5...on 3 different record labels no less!

That’s funny!

Several years ago, I worked in a government office where Joe Walsh would visit. I think it had to do with his child and the arts. He seemed very nice.
