Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has broken with Donald Trump on the issue at the centre of the government shutdown.
The US government shut down on Oct 1 after the Democrats and Republicans were unable to break the deadlock to pass a spending bill.
Democrats have demanded that tax credits introduced in 2021 to make health insurance more affordable for millions of Americans be extended, arguing that their expiration would double what low-and middle-income people who purchase health insurance through the Affordable Care Act pay on their premiums next year.
The Maga firebrand said she was “absolutely disgusted” that health insurance premiums could double when the tax credits expire at the end of the year, and that she refused to play “loyalty games”.
In a lengthy post on X, she wrote: “I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district.”

To get things, you become a productive member of society and you earn things. To me, if you can still fog a mirror and you're drawing some form of transfer payments (welfare, food stamps, rent subsidies, etc.), you do some kind of work for the gov't. I don't care if it's scrubbing floors in public buildings, mowing public park green space, whatever...you earn that money. As to health insurance, the reason it's so expensive is because so many hospitals treat people who don't pay for their health care and don't care that we pay their share, too. True, there are those who truly cannot work, and we should help them. But I'll bet 95% could work, but choose not to because of the huge, free, safety net we've built for them. Enough! Let them start paying their way in this society.
Unfortunately, the Limited Government Train left the station many decades ago and it’s not coming back. The best that President Trump can do is chip away at the gargantuan size of this monster while he has some power to do so.
MTG has a point. Without the subsidies or some portion thereof, low wage earners might be facing a $1,000/month premium for even a lousy policy. That’s how bad things have gotten. Nobody in power has addressed the huge increase in medical costs.
Regarding “healthcare for the poor,” I want to see the budgets of ALL expenses for these people. Any cigarette purchases? Ghetto nail solon bills? $300 hair extensions? New ghetto wheels for their Mercedes?
You only can’t pay for health insurance if you don’t want to.
The GOP did have solid proposals for decreasing costs, for healthcare, housing, education, and much more——— stop importing people into this country who contribute nothing but their dependency. Stop the government from subsidizing all their needs, which encourages suppliers to raise prices. Medicine, housing, retail businesses everything is still controlled by the law of supply and demand, and will continue to charge what the traffic will bear. Before medical insurance, a visit to your local doctor, or local hospital was less than you now pay in co-pays and deductables, WITH insurance...
So now miss conservative wants government subsidies of healthcare.
“The Maga firebrand said she was “absolutely disgusted” that health insurance premiums could double when the tax credits expire at the end of the year, and that she refused to play “loyalty games”.”
Has nothing to do with the shutdown. An important and divisive issue like healthcare requires significant debate, regular order and legislation if needed.
MTG is a clickbait politician who only - ONLY - cares about herself.
So now she is for taxpayer funded healthcare?
Obamacare is ridiculously expensive and was only “affordable” bc taxpayers were subsidizing the cost. During covid, the subsidies were even higher. Trumps bill put an end to these subsidies and now she wants them back for her kids.
Hey MTG, here’s an idea, you pay for healthcare for your kids or tell them to get a job.
The dirty little secret is that Republicans represent many states and House districts that are filled with white people on welfare who would throw their asses out of office if they don’t keep the money spigot open.
One of the reasons why health insurance premiums are so high is that federal law imposes ridiculous requirements for health plans that pretty much guarantee that costs will escalate at exorbitant rates indefinitely.
“My rates will increase , but I don’t believe we should fund healthcare premiums.”
Yep.
We should get rid of Medicare.
And the insurance industry shouldn't be so deep in our government: writing bills, legions of lobbyists and who really knows what else. I'd like to know what percentage of medical payments end up in Washington D.C. - then off to the Land of Missing Socks and COVID Funds.
Combine that with Big Pharma's influence and we see old Mr. Smith wouldn't stand a chance in this era. She's unorthodox and a bit unhinged, but Margie makes up for the testosterone missing in at least three or four congressmen.
She is a mule faced moron who knows how to use the media for name recognition.
There is no way to keep the government going if the Left doesn’t cooperate on funding it.
You say that like it’s a bad thing.
Medicare is free.
Your bill is for an enhancement.
AFFORDABILITY
Silver plans would be limited to a maximum deductible of three times the Medicare Part A amount [2025: $1676].
I would also make bronze plans low cost by having co-insurance up to $10,000 at up to 50% with the policy upfront amount paid up front to the insurance company by the insured. Policy percentages would normally be 20% and based on the Medicare amounts unless contractually specified otherwise. Policy percentages might be less for certain things and contractually capped by time periods, say 50% the upfront amount the first three months of the calendar year, 60% the first six months of the calendar year, 70% the first nine months of the calendar year and the whole amount the whole calendar year. If and how an upfront amount would get invested would be subject to contract. Unused amounts of upfront money would be refunded after each policy is closed out. A policy would not be closed out until the time allowed for claim submission has expired.
I would also make copper plans low cost by only covering Part A scope items plus what Part B would pay for any general or regional anesthesia surgery.
I would allow Federal PPACA exchanges to offer Interstate Class Drug Plans,
exempt from state control that cover under contract at the time of policy issue at least:
1. 80% of all FDA-approved recombinant drugs by key active entity
2. 80% of all key FDA breakthrough chemical active entities under patent as of January 1 of the coverage year
used in a drug approved by the FDA by August 1 prior
3. 80% of all key chemical active entities under patent as of January 1 of the coverage year
used in a drug approved by the FDA by August 1 prior
4. 90% of all WHO “essential” drugs
This system would allow for genuine negotiation between drug plans and drug companies. Drug plans would have an incentive to try to buy drugs from drug companies and drug companies would have an incentive to make deals to make sales.
Plan in-network drugs would be supplied at on an all-the doctors prescribe basis. The co-pays would be roughly equal to mere manufacturing cost. Out-of-plan drugs need not be covered at all.
The new bronze, copper and Interstate Class Drug Plans are meant for higher income folks and would not be PPACA subsidy eligible.
OK, got it.
North Korea does not have doubling health care premiums. It sure as hell does not have government shutdowns.
Who cares if Jong Un can't float a new destroyer?
“...they can destroy it with an in-perpetuity shutdown...”
8% of the govt is shut down. 92% goes on as normal. Ignore the Democrats.
