Staten Island mansion, formerly owned by Gambino boss, taken off market

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A once-notorious mansion and local landmark in Todt Hill appears to be off the market after nearly a year.

After being listed with a price tag of $18 million, 177 Benedict Rd. — also known as the “White House” — is no longer listed for sale as of Oct. 2, according to Zillow.

Once home to Paul Castellano, a boss of the Gambino Crime family, the Todt Hill residence features eight ensuite bedrooms, a 13-car showroom, both indoor and outdoor Olympic-sized pools, plus a custom pergola adorned with Italian fountains.

The neo-classical mansion spans an impressive 33,000 square feet across four levels, and the main house offers a commercial-grade designer kitchen, along with a vast balcony that seamlessly connects the indoors to the outdoors.

According to public record, the address has had a total of three owners and has been vastly renovated since Castellano had it built in 1980. But the property’s reputation as a “mob house” has persisted.

According to Zillow, the home has been in flux over the last year.

After being listed for sale in October 2023, the property website notes a pending sale dated June 14, 2024.

A month later, the home was up for sale again before the listing was removed in late September 2024. The house was then up for sale again in October 2024.

The mansion also featured on the HGTV show “Zillow Gone Wild.”

The Benedict Road address got its 15 minutes on July 25, in an episode titled “Where the Trolls Live.” The show is now streaming on HBO Max and Discovery+.

Castellano’s former house, which encompasses some 33,000 square feet of living space and is spread across 2.3 acres of land, last sold in August 2000 for $3.1 million.

Someone may buy it just to find what may be hidden in its walls or fountains.

A few years ago I had some free time so I hopped on the Staten Island Ferry to visit Castellano’s house. It was a tough walk but I got there. Very nice house...surprisingly nice neighborhood.

First house we bought was owned by a big bookie in our area. Everything in the house was jerry rigged and we figure it was because people in the trades owed the guy money (using plumbing fixtures on a propane line). My old neighbor used to joke that I should have opened up the walls to look for $$.

I consider myself reasonably well off, and I couldn’t afford to maintain that, let alone pay the NY taxes on it.

Smudging with incense and burning sage is just not going to do the job. Plus the pre-sale inspection may need cadaver dogs and those cameras that see underground.

“ Smudging with incense and burning sage”

Who said anything about pagan rituals?

It was sarcasm, however in support of the idea of a genuine exorcism.
