No more scribbling: Indian court tells doctors to fix their handwriting
BBC News, Delhi ^ | 10/1/2025 | Geeta Pandey

At a time when most people use keyboards to write, does handwriting really matter?

Yes, say Indian courts, if the writer is a doctor.

Jokes around the notoriously bad handwriting of many doctors that can only be deciphered by pharmacists are common in India, as around the world. But the latest order emphasising the importance of clear handwriting came recently from the Punjab and Haryana High Court which said that "legible medical prescription is a fundamental right" as it can make a difference between life and death.

The court order came in a case that had nothing to do with the written word. It involved allegations of rape, cheating and forgery by a woman and Justice Jasgurpreet Singh Puri was hearing the man's petition for bail.

The woman had alleged that the man had taken money from her promising her a government job, conducted fake interviews with her and sexually exploited her.

The accused denied the charges - he said they had a consensual relationship and the case was brought on because of a dispute over money.

Justice Puri said when he looked at the medico-legal report - written by a government doctor who had examined the woman - he found it incomprehensible.

"It shook the conscience of this court as not even a word or a letter was legible," he wrote in the order.

Instead of “pig Latin” it’s “med Latin” (some of it literally Latin)

"legible medical prescription is a fundamental right"

A bit of a stretch, that.

Does the court order refer to the Devanagari script used for Hindi and other Subcontinental languages?

We joke about this stuff but imagine getting the wrong prescription filled because of sloppy writing? I suppose it used to happen.

Some times there is no known language doctors write orders in.computers help...but it also helps them write a perfectly legible dangerous order. Plus different hospitals may use different computer systems so docs less familiar with one hospitals system can really mess up at a different hospital.

Personal experience.

In other news, the Indians beat the Tigers today, despite or because of the tiger being the national animal of India.

Not liking this because I have doctor’s handwriting, especially my signature. Nothing wrong with being cryptic. Unless I can’t read what I wrote down a while back. Then it’s kind of an issue.

Same here. I joked with my doctor one day that my handwriting was so bad that some medical schools were using it as an example of what doctors should avoid. :-)

That’s why they need to use a dictation system. Then medical transcriptionists could turn the dictation into a formal medical legal report. There are obviously tens of thousands of Indian MTs because they’re the ones taking the jobs of American MTs. 🤬
