How Zelensky’s Charm Offensive Reversed Trump’s Skepticism on Ukraine

A half-year ago in the Oval Office, President Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that “you don’t have the cards” in the war with Russia. On Tuesday at the United Nations, Trump lauded the performance of Ukraine’s army and poured scorn on Russia’s military efforts.

“I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Trump said on Truth Social after meeting with Zelensky. “Why not?”

U.S. officials said that Trump issued the statement in part to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to make a deal, since no real progress toward ending the war had been made since last month’s meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska.

The sharp verbal shift from Trump came amid Russia’s continued failure to make significant gains on the battlefield, a slowdown in the Russian economy and a concerted effort by Zelensky to woo the U.S. president.

Trump has spent recent days with U.S. officials who have long pushed for a stronger stance toward Ukraine as he prepared for the meeting with Zelensky, including Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg and new ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz.

They updated Trump on current battlefield conditions, according to two people familiar with the situation, noting that Russia has made little progress in recent years.

Trump was also made aware of a planned Ukrainian offensive which would require U.S. intelligence support, the people said.

Zelensky showed on Tuesday that he has learned from the disastrous meeting with Trump in February. He has smartened up his attire after criticism from Trump supporters and, seated next to the U.S. president ahead of the Tuesday meeting, repeatedly thanked him for his support, praising his efforts to end the war while talking up

Trump puffed him up and told him he could win the war with the help of the EU. I.e., you’re on your own Big Boy!

Simply nonsense. Putin managed to do two stupid things at the same time: a) ignore and mock Trump's peace overtures; b) fail to achieve any significant gains towards Russia's grandiose stated war aims.

In addition, the Europeans have stepped up to fund the war, and the Ukrainians showed themselves to be resilient and have caused real damage to both the Russian army and the Russian economy, the latter by droning Russia's oil infrastructure.

I still think if Trump is serious about ending the war he needs to do two things: i) up the pain on Russia (the sanctions may help); ii) offer a settlement plan that gives Putin enough to back down and Ukraine realistic security arrangements to guarantee it won't be attacked again.

“Trump was also made aware of a planned Ukrainian offensive which would require U.S. intelligence support”

“Not my war” - President Trump

The U.S. is providing ISR flight surveillance intelligence for Ukraine’s drone and missile attacks on Russian targets in Crimea and the western Black Sea ports that have taken place over the past week and continuing right now. And they’re USAF and USN spy planes over the Black Sea. Not NATO.

Right. Trump does a 180 on Ukraine and now it's because he's really playing 7th dimension chess.

Billions of U.S. taxpayers' dollars dumped into the Ukrainian economy yet no one knows where it all went except a lot of it found its way back to the Bidens. The most corrupt country on earth now has Trump as its strongest supporter.

Isn't Trump the guy who called the last occupant of the Oval Office "crooked Joe"?

So where are the Bondi indictments?

I don't know about y'all but this really pisses me off big time.

I thought 2024 was all supposed to be about giving Americans their country back.

Ukraine has its President Zelensky. The European Union is a union of 27 nations, each with its head of state, a Prime Minister, President or other officer, and the European Commission which sits atop the EU has its President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the current President of the European Council, António Costa.

Why then are all the media, the headlines and opinion pages (and your statement above) all intent on making President Trump the responsible party for "ending the war."

Given the EU is at least 100 million more in population than the US and, of course, nearer to the war, why is not some one (or more) of these dignitaries leading, and "serious about ending the war," rather than passing the buck onto President Trump?

That's the least of the Intelligence that the US has been providing to Ukraine via NATO.

Whether this continues after the Biden Era authorizations expire at the end of the fiscal year (Sept 30) is not clear. If Trump pull the plug on this ISR aid the Ukraine is going to be very, very hard pressed.

The ISR flights for the Black Sea port drone and missile attacks over the past week were U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy. They were authorized by President Trump. They were not NATO flights.

Charm?? He sure didn’t charm President Trump into giving him anymore freebies. This moron and his European supporters, many who are members of NATO, were charmed by Trump to buy weapons from this country to fight that endless war. Now they’re all involved in a proxy war with Russia, but at least the US is no longer.

--- "Trump is no chump! You don't think he's seen this all before in business and politics? Keep your enemies close....."

President Trump spoke at length at the UN, and reiterated some things in his later posts. One obvious-to-me absence from the WSJ article was the simple sentence: "Europe has to step it up."

It surely looks as if there is a media full court press on to try and make President Trump's very long statement into some sound bites, to ignore a few elements.

The pertinent sentence from which the above is drawn, and not represented in the WSJ is:

In the event that Russia is not ready to make a deal to end the war, the United States is fully prepared to impose a very strong round of tariffs, which I believe would stop the bloodshed very quickly. But for those tariffs to be effective, European nations—all of you gathered here right now—would have to join us in adopting the exact same measures. You're much closer to this conflict than we are. Europe has to step it up. They can't continue buying oil and gas from Russia while fighting Russia. ..

The WSJ "charm offensive" headline aside, the article IGNORES what President Trump said, in order to tell us "what President Trump said."

And, of course, that is also why the article is posted. "To tell us what President Trump said," while ignoring what President Trump said.

Europe should pay for the defense. And watch for the upcoming Ukraine-US drone deal announcement.
