Hillary Clinton slammed President Donald Trump’s administration on Thursday for trying to “intimidate” late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.
ABC announced on Wednesday that Kimmel’s show would be suspended indefinitely after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr threatened to take action against the network. Carr’s threat came after Kimmel’s comments on the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk prompted outrage from Trump’s MAGA base.
CNN’s Fareed Zakaria asked Clinton whether the suspension of Kimmel was an example of “state censorship.”
“I think this is a very clear example of using the power of the state to suppress speech. It is a direct government action to try to intimidate employers, organizations, corporations, much of which we’ve already seen, to remove an opponent, even though it’s a comic,” Clinton said.
She said that she had “no idea” that she could have asked the FCC to take someone off the air if someone made jokes about her she did not like when she was in public life. She went on to urge the administration to defend free speech even when it is critical of Trump.
“But you know, you defend free speech in terrible times, and you defend free speech that is used against holding people in power accountable through satire, humor, barbed attacks,” she said. “You defend it even when it is offensive.”
“And they have, unfortunately taken the view that we believe in free speech, as long as we’re making the speech and your speech agrees with us, otherwise, we’re against free speech,” she added.
