The public, perhaps driven by the LMSM, seemed pretty determined to punish the Republicans for Watergate. They wound up screwing themselves.

A number of states were very close in 1976. Carter carried Ohio by 11 thousand votes and Wisconsin by 25 thousand. Ford’s gaffe in the debate (about Poland) may have made the difference, or the way that the Nixon pardon was handled. (Maybe if Nixon had been forced to grovel a bit the public would have accepted the pardon more readily.) A shift of 27 electoral votes would have denied Carter the victory.
