The dam contained Roman fossils, including catapult stones, and pottery sherds from period during the Jewish Revolt in 67, which resulted in the destruction of the Temple in 70. The Romans built the dam to contain run-off water when the attacked Masada for two years prior to the killing of the Jewish Zealots that defended it. There was a steady stream of Roman soldiers and slaves who marched along the Western shores of the Dead Sea to Masada, where they built the ramp and seige machines which pierced the 20 foot walls that were constructed at the top of Masada.
