India has adopted the Soviet economic model since 1947 independence. It significantly imports from China and Russia while primarily exporting to the U.S. and EU while keeping most of its domestic market restricted. There is a significant trade imbalance. President Trump is correct to insist on tariffs to normalize the out of balance relationship.

I listened to historian Sara Pain on how badly mismanaged American and Indian foreign policy was handled. To call American leaders naïve about Pakistan would be a massive understatement. Among other things, Ameria thought it could arm Pakistan in return for helping against the Soviets and everything would be just fine regarding their interaction with the Indians. Then along came LBJ’s awful interactions with the Indians because he wanted them to support America in Vietnam. He REALLY poisoned any potential good relationship.

If India was to become an expanding local hegemon like China, I think we’d have the same problem with India we currently have with China. But due to India’s internal politics I don’t see that happening this century.

You know nothing about the old Soviet model, where the government owned EVERYTHING. India’s Congress party moved India closer to the Soviets after India was freed of colonialism, but, even under them, India came nowhere close to Soviet communism. India under Modi has become much freer economically than, say, Germany. India is not Stalinist just because it is protectionist, any more than the USA was when tariffs were high. We should be befriending India, not pushing it to the Chinese due to a war that is none of our business.
