The Virginia Beach City Council is trying to ban shops along the famous boardwalk from displaying clothing with raunchy slogans to 'clean up' the family-friendly resort.

The southeastern Virginia coastal city has long attracted families for its abundance of activities for all ages and stunning shores.

But its three-mile oceanfront boardwalk has always been the star of the show for its games, restaurants and stores.

The vulgar clothing is just as reflection of the type of people who vacation in Virginia Beach. You do not see stuff like that at Hilton Head Island.

I’m 55. I have seen this slogan since a child. Virginia is for Lovers. I hate that shirt and slogan. Geez. Change it up.

I live here. They do this every few years. I hope they don’t get rid of the Men’s boxer shorts that say, “Home of the whopper!”

There’s a growing crassness to our culture. I’m seeing youtube advertisements for erection drugs that I consider over the limit. My limit, at least.

I saw a beach shirt that read—“ I’m not gay, but $20 is $20”

I’m 59 and used to live in Virginia Beach. I agree: it was always a stupid slogan and continues to be stupid.

“Virginia is for Lovers”

You know, I’ve never understood what the heck that’s even supposed to mean.

The only problem is this little thing called the 1st amendment. Government imposed, no, self imposed by the shopkeepers, ok.

“There’s a growing crassness to our culture”

Have you noticed TV commercials pushing the limits of using curse.

They don’t actually use THE word but a word that sounds so similar it’s hard to tell the difference.

Also, the F word can be heard on television 24/7 now......and many times movies on TV will bleep out profane language EXCEPT for GD.......that one is apparently OK to be heard.

Disgusting

From Chatgpt:

Virginia is For Lovers has been around since 1969. It was part of a broader campaign to appeal to young, adventurous travelers during a time of significant cultural change in the U.S. The team had initially considered more specific slogans like:

“Virginia is for History Lovers”

“Virginia is for Beach Lovers”

“Virginia is for Mountain Lovers”

But they eventually decided to drop the qualifiers and just say “Virginia is for Lovers”—a bold, open-ended statement that was more emotional and universal. It suggested that Virginia was a place for people who love something—history, nature, beaches, or just life in general.

Cultural Impact

The slogan quickly gained popularity and helped rebrand Virginia as a warm, welcoming, and diverse destination.

It has been featured on countless license plates, T-shirts, ads, and souvenirs.

In 2009, Advertising Age named it one of the top ten tourism campaigns of all time.

“ The only problem is this little thing called the 1st amendment. Government imposed, no, self imposed by the shopkeepers, ok.”

I really don’t think a city council banning obscenities from public display is a violation of the first amendment. There is such a thing as common decency, although it is becoming less so.

Virginia Beach is a tourist destination my friend.

I have a friend that’s a general manager at a high end resort right on the beach.

Personally, if I spent a bunch of money to take my family on vacation there I wouldn’t want my children exposed to that kind of vulgarity.
