In Russia, Corruption Cases Follow Battlefield Failures
NY Times ^ | 7/26/2025 | Paul Sonne and Milana Mazaeva

Officials in three of the five Russian regions bordering Ukraine have been accused of embezzling funds for border defenses.

-snip-

The border fortification embezzlement cases seem in part to be aimed at quelling anger among Russians in the border regions over Moscow’s failure to protect them from Ukrainian attacks, especially after Ukrainian forces occupied part of the Kursk region. The charges imply that the border with Ukraine would have been better protected had local officials not stolen the money for the defenses, claims that also deflect blame from the Kremlin.

The legal actions attracted attention this month when Russia’s transportation minister, Roman V. Starovoyt, was found dead, in what authorities called a suspected suicide, hours after the Kremlin announced he had been relieved of his duties. Russian media reported that Mr. Starovoyt, who served as governor of the Kursk region when the border fortifications were ordered, had been implicated in the case.

-snip-

Timur Ivanov, the deputy defense minister sentenced this month to 13 years in prison for embezzlement, had been the target of an exposé by the late opposition campaigner Aleksei A. Navalny’s anti-corruption group. The group documented Mr. Ivanov’s family’s lavish lifestyle, with villa and yacht rentals on the Côte d’Azur and a Rolls-Royce, despite his government salary.

Mr. Ivanov, who oversaw construction for the military, denied the accusations.

Mr. Shoigu’s removal and corruption cases against his longtime underlings, including Mr. Ivanov, have been interpreted by some Russian military bloggers as belated accountability for the military’s failures at the outset of the war.

I was listening to Youtuber “Perun”, and he described the method by which Russia was detecting and punishing embezzlement from front line troops. When they lose a battle, they find out from the troops what was not supplied. Then they find out if that material was supposed to be bought. They track backwards and do a forensic audit to determine if the money was stolen. They then punish or execute the thief. The problem with this is the basis of overall corruption is not being erased. It’s a band aide to address a specific failing in the system. It is not and is not intended to be systemic.

(On account of Putin is believed to be among the richest men in the world and that didn’t happen on his salary. In my experience working in large organizations, if the guy at the top is stealing, then everyone down the chain to the janitor is also stealing.)

In more important news, military observers say Pokrovsk will fall soon. Massive attack said to be imminent. This will open a large land area for Russia to pour into.

NATO’s miscalculation in using Ukraine to start a war has led to what we are seeing now. A toothless NATO watching from the sidelines, Trump with little left to send except defensive weapons trying to save civilians.

Russia has been saying that for years. And that is the area where the most Russians have been killed.

All you Russian bots can only talk about the future because the past has been very bad for Russians. Like, where is the Black Sea Russian fleet? At the bottom of the Black Sea.

Russia started the War because Putin’s military told him he could take Ukraine in 3 days!!! Meanwhile almost 4 years later and a million Russian casualties, Ships at the bottom of the Black Sea, having to pay North Koreans to fight for Russia, there is no end to the decimation of the plants in Russia. And Russia is powerless to stop the drone attacks...

Gen Milley 3 Days

General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, expressed concerns about the vulnerability of Kyiv in the event of a Russian invasion. He told lawmakers that Kyiv might not withstand the first 72 hours of such an invasion and could fall in less than 3 days.

I’m reporting on the present. Don’t like Putin at all. Don’t NATO at all either. Patriots may not help much, Ukraine needs many thousands of troops, where are all of Ukraine’s “friends”?

“Ukraine’s much-hyped Patriot air defense systems are under fresh scrutiny, even as Donald Trump approves sending more. A Wall Street Journal report reveals Russia’s modern missiles — like the Iskander-M — are flying erratically and deploying radar decoys, exposing the Patriot’s blind spots. Ukrainian officials call the system “underperforming.”

1. As has been true for thousands of years, fixed position defenses lose. Even Metz (educational to visit) lost, Patton just bypassed it after learning it was too messy to take. Ukraine is doomed without hundreds of thousands of fresh troops and war materials available to move the front back where it came from. Ukraine is going to get virtually no troops and not enough weapons. Russian expected to be firing 1,000 drones a day soon.

2. Ukraine built its best defensive positions close the border, which was smart. Unfortunately, Russia defeated them and now the defensive positions left are inferior.

A lot of people thought Russia would take Ukraine in 3 days AFTER RUSSIA HAD INVADED! Not before! But Ukraine fooled lots of people and are now showing how weak the Russian military is.

Russia is bombing hospitals, schools and apartment buildings because they cannot make progress on the ground.
