EXCLUSIVE: Trump administration eyes Alcatraz reopening to house nation’s ‘worst of the worst’

EXCLUSIVE: Fox News was granted access to Alcatraz Island Thursday as U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum toured the infamous former prison in San Francisco at the direction of President Donald Trump.

The visit was part of an official review to determine whether the site could be brought back into use as a high-security federal detention center.

"This was an idea of the president," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt explained during a White House briefing Thursday in Washington, D.C. "He spoke about it in May and directed his administration to review a reopening plan for Alcatraz if it is possible."

After Trump’s May 5 announcement about reopening Alcatraz as a working prison, Bondi and Burgum joined Fox News correspondent David Spunt to visit "the Rock" to receive a briefing on the site and assess the 91-year-old former federal prison's infrastructure.

The visit, which included walk-throughs of the main cell blocks and off-limits areas normally closed to the public, was a fact-finding mission and not an official announcement of reopening.

Does San Fran have gators?

Terrible idea. Alcatraz was in bad shape when it closed. The walls had been weakened enough by the sea air, that's why Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers were able to tunnel out of their cells.

No doubt the infrastructure of the facility has only gotten worse since then.

Or the tide will carry them out to sea.

I suppose the entire facility could be demolished and rebuilt. The location is certainly pretty secure.

They deliberately added hot water plumbing in the past so the inmates’ bodies wouldn’t be accustomed to the cold water and survive the hypothermia of the cold water in an escape.

𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘚𝘢𝘯 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴?

If anybody escapes the island and make it back to land, they’d have to deal with piles of human feces, used needles, homeless, and other disturbed individuals. Seems like it would be less of a hassle just to stay in prison.

The entire West is full of uninhabited federal land. Built a large, new complex that would provided work there. Alcatraz is a waste in many forms, especially with it being in California.

Very Bad Idea... very costly asbestos removal, logictic nightmare, not rehab friendly.

Probably more fiscally responsible to lay one out in Nev or Utah.

Growing up, my next door neighbor worked in Alcatraz as a corrections officer after World War II.

By then, the salt water had corroded the steel and decayed the concrete severely, some places were so decayed they were closed off for safety reasons. The birds had even taken over some of it and would attack anyone going into their turf.

Alcatraz would need complete ground up rebuilding to make it any more than a museum.

Trump likes to talk this way to shake things up and rattle people, he knows there is no way Congress will go along with this.

He likes to get conversations started

Even if they don’t pan out.

Who would have thought we’d have Alligator Alcatraz just 6 weeks ago?

Don’t see it happening. Bondi/Bergum-good way to get the conversation started but a mini-junket paid for by us?
