An Australian small business owner says she lost about $50,000 after Instagram suspended her accounts over what she describes as an innocent photo of three dogs.
Rochelle Marinato, managing director at Pilates World Australia, recently received an email from Instagram's parent company Meta stating her accounts had been suspended because the image breached community guidelines relating to 'child sexual exploitation, abuse and nudity'.
The photo had been mistakenly flagged by an AI moderator which confused the image of the dogs with those of children.
'I spent three weeks researching how to get my account back. In that time our revenue dropped by 75 per cent,' she said.

Crappy AI strikes again!
Social media is Big Brother. Big Tech gives away privacy to the government. Be very careful in what you post online.
You have an interesting point. AI is not human, it never will be human. This story is a good example that in some cases AI can be quite stupid. AI is nothing more than a glorified example of garbage in garbage out.
I read years ago where the intel people used computers to monitor communications. When a computer found a bad guy it triggered a human review.
The same needs to be done in cases like this Australian woman. AI should not be allowed to take punitive action.
Well the AI does have a point as I don’t see ANY clothing on the dogs, and none of the dogs look to be over 18 years old.
Rules are rules, and programming is programming...
AI and Facial Recognition tech are the harbingers of the tyranny and disorder predicted in all the classic dystopian novels. We are at the point where with the proper equipment, one can locate a person, or at least gain an understanding of their pattern movements, anywhere on the planet. This, I would presume, is why the ICE officers cover their faces. If identified off duty someplace, nefarious users of such a system can notify those who seek to do them harm. Not a good situation.
the robot is always right

I’ve been banned on Twitter/X for over six years now.
Despite numerous appeals.
I never violated the terms of service.
I wonder if this lady was targeted for some other reason and the dog pic BS was just the excuse...
Yes be careful, I shared a single picture my daughter posted and Facebook somehow posted over 2000 of her camera roll pictures. She had only posted that one.
How did that happen?
I deleted my post after she contacted me. They have access to your entire camera roll. Be warned, privacy no more.
Try again.
I was banned during President Trump’s first term when I reported threats against him. I kept appealing and they didn’t even bother to acknowledge that I had appealed. Two weeks ago, after not trying for 3-4 yrs, I was reinstated with an apology over a mistaken ban!!!!!
Puppy porn?
Interesting.
Thus, the focus should be on the contrast between a Musk company vs one controlled by the evil zuck.
It’s AI. Trust me, what could go wrong?...
I don’t understand... Clearly, the dogs are NOT wearing any clothing.
Hey, at least Instagram allowed her to know she was being banned and why, unlike Facebook’s shadow bans.
“This story is a good example that in some cases AI can be quite stupid.”
I asked Grok recently to list my state’s representatives and party. It listed one as being in office who had lost his primary. That’s really pathetic. Now I don’t trust it for anything.
The term AI is only half true.
/John Connor wept.
People need to diversify their business model. You don't want a single point of failure.
No different than a bureaucracy, anonymous AI means no one is responsible for any mistakes any time, any manner, any way.
I have 3600 pictures and videos on my cell phone. X and Instagram want access to them. Even though there is nothing on there that is the least bit provocative
(Except for funny pictures of Biden) I won’t allow them access. It’s none of their beezwaxx.
To be fair, my miniature corgi is pretty much a naked human. More human than ‘others’ I have to associate with.....
