Distilling the Week

Focusing on the Iran conflict, on President Trump’s foreign policy, the pushback from COVID tyranny, and the Supreme Court’s ruling on deference to experts.

It’s hot, it’s summer, the kids are home, you want to enjoy the break and not wade through hundreds of articles, mostly about ephemera or written by the ill-informed, so I’m going to do it for you. This week I highlight a few reports which I find sound. Because of space constraints and copyright issues, I can’t post them in their entirety but urge you to do so at your leisure. I found these articles which focus on the war, on President Trump’s foreign policy, the pushback from COVID tyranny and the Supreme Court’s ruling on deference to experts, the most significant matters of the week.

Iran and Israel

Spencer Guard accurately described the initial Israel response to aggression against it by Iran:

Imagine if Operation Overlord in World War II began with the elimination of Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, Chief of the German High Command; Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS; Field Marshal Erwin Rommel; numerous other senior generals; and the destruction of all of Germany’s air defenses, before a single Allied soldier landed on the beaches of Normandy. That’s not an exaggerated hypothetical. It’s a near-parallel to what Israel just did to Iran.

Israel’s war against Iran is still ongoing. But what has already unfolded will be studied for decades.

Israel's current military operation against Iran is officially called Operation Rising Lion, launched on June 13, 2025, with a sweeping and precise preemptive strike. The operation was not just historic. It was transformational. It redefined what shock and awe can look like in the 21st century.

This was not merely a strike. It was a campaign -- a layered, synchronized demonstration of modern operational art

...a layered, synchronized demonstration of modern operational art...

To which the author adds a layer of his own.

You’d think not too long after Mahsa Amini, 22, died after being arrested by morality police for not wearing her hijab correctly.
But here we are
https://www.allianceofiranianwomen.org/2025/03/iranian-activist-is-sentenced-to-178-lashes-and-18-months-in-prison-after-she-was-arrested-for-not-wearing-a-hijab/

Her latest sentence includes nine months of imprisonment and 74 lashes for ‘disrupting public order,’ nine months for ‘resisting law enforcement officers,’ 74 lashes for ‘insulting an officer on duty,’ and 30 lashes for ‘causing non-visible injuries.’

Good article. Thanks for posting. Nazi Germany didn’t have base camps around the world and billions of believers plotting to offer the ideology by “handsome” means or else. This totalitarian ideology is supreme over all others.

Why is the thump keg needed?

A thump keg is used in distillation to perform a secondary distillation, increasing the alcohol content and improving the flavor of the spirit. It utilizes heat from the main still to re-distill the liquid, making the process more efficient and effective for producing high-proof alcohol.

I don’t nor ever have distilled. I was studying to make craft beer, though.

I brew my own as well.
Try this recipe
1 can mount mileck light
1 quart honey
Bottom fermenting lager yeast
Use a very light hops
You have to ferment at 55* for about a month but it’s worth it
